Nelson Conversion Accuracy obtainable on your lower?
Hello folks,
I have one Nelson .22 conversion unit on an old Jim Clark Colt hardball lower. If I use the red dot top rail, it will let me keep a 10-round mag of Wolf MT or SK+, and some of the Eley stuff, inside the X and 10 rings at 50 yards on a standard slow-fire 50 yard target from the sandbag. Of course, if I am sloppy I get a few 9's. I have never moved the upper to a different lower, so thought I would ask if anyone noticed much improvement from one lower to another? Also, I tighten the unit down quite snug using the little tool Larry provides. I noticed flyers if the guide rod was too loose, so I check the tension on the guide rod every 500 rounds or so. I am basically wondering if I can make the unit shoot smaller groups by setting it up any differently than I currently do, or do I resort to TENEX for best groups and stay with my existing lower? Of course, the pistol would be more accurate if it was in a Ransom Rest, but I have to do what I can with the sandbag, so the "me" errors are a constant.
Thanks for any help!
Amanda

Amanda I would say anything's possible :-)
I doubt you would see any Improvement on a different lower.

To make a difference one lower verses another, one of them would have to be way out of spec.
The barrel is locked to the lower the optic rail is screwed to the barrel, so the lower shouldn't make a difference.

You might see improvement with a good non hardball trigger.
Your sandbag setup and technique might play a factor.
Not to mention very precise practice of the fundamentals, even off a rest.

Thanks for the good news!
I use the Hardball gun so that I can get used to the trigger for CMP hardball, as opposed to the Pardini SP trigger that feels like a light wind will set it off, and my wad gun's light trigger. Too bad I can't just shoot one pistol for everything. I'll not bother with switching lowers, just buy some TENEX and use when needed

The big difference I noticed going from a parkerized Springfield Armory lower to a stainless Caspian/Foster was in the operation. The Springfield was a little rough. The Foster's oversized rails required a bit of fitting, and once they were polished up, the slide had (seemingly) far less play when installed, and was significantly smoother. Accuracy-wise, there's no difference, but I definitely enjoy shooting the Nelson/Foster a lot more.
About the only thing I regret is not getting a carbon steel frame. I'd have done a lot more work on the frame's exterior--cleaning up millmarks and modifying it--if I knew I could just give it a blue-in-a-bottle job at the end.

Keyholed,
Make your mods to the frame and have the rounded portion bead blasted and repolish the the flats with wet/dry sandpaper and it will look like new. Pretty simple.
