Trailside Recoil Spring Empty Trailside Recoil Spring

I have a new recoil spring but I have not figured how to get the old one off as yet, is there something i can not see to get this done?

Pull the spring back away from the guide rod with a pick and hold it there. Turn the tip of the rod so you can remove it. After removing it work the spring out
