Accurate ammo for a Beretta 92FS w/Stock Barrel
Does anyone know what ammo shoots best out of a Beretta 92FS stock gun with the stock Barrel for bullseye shooting (in a CMP match)?
Thank you,
Marc

It's pretty much a waste of time with a stock barrel. They just wont cut it at 50 yards for competition. But the Atlanta arms match 9mm is about as good as it gets, its what most shoot in there modified berettas.

For those of you shooting the Beretta in Service Pistol matches, what are you using? Atlanta Arms or hand loads?
I have been reloading Hornady 115 FMJ over 6.1-6.2 grains of Power Pistol with a 1.15 OAL

That's the load I used with my Kidd Beretta with Bar Sto barrel, but the Atlanta Arms ammo shoots extremely well.sixftunda wrote:For those of you shooting the Beretta in Service Pistol matches, what are you using? Atlanta Arms or hand loads?

Just curious. Have you ever chronographed that load?C.Perkins wrote:Never tried it in a stock Beretta, but this is my load for my service pistol, shoots as good as Atlanta out my my pistol, ymmv.

Never chrono'd the load.
I shot my Chrony once, shot it again and it still would not work.
It is not as snappy as Atlanta, but gets the job done.

Hi Marc,
From 2004-2008 I shot a stock Beretta 92 to see how it would place in Leg Matches. My goal was all shots in the black at 50yds and 95/100 in timed and rapid = 270. I used commercial American Eagle 115gr FMJ 9mm ammo. Scores were 281,277,264,274,273,275,269,267,269,270.
Here's why:
I recommend shooters not spend a lot of money on a ball gun unless you want to win at the Nationals. The thinking is most non-distinguished shooters, who get points, shoot in the 80-88% range. So a shooter committed to earning Distinguished status should consentrate on using their ball gun in practice, the CF & 45 portions of the matches they attend. It becomes easy to score at or above 90% and accomplish Distinguished status sooner.
Hope this helps,
Wes

Wes;
Good scores with the stock 92
I agree with shooting a pistol more often than just the EIC matches.
I occasionally shoot it for the CF practice matches.

Reading this makes me wanna put my Beretta back to bone stock and see how it shoots. I never tried it before I put the sights and barrel on it.

I think what he and I both agree on is to shoot that damn dusty thing once and awhile to be able to be competent with it.

Re: Accurate ammo for a Beretta 92FS w/Stock Barrel
My almost stock* Beretta had a ten ring group size at 25 yards and a vertical spread of 18 inches at 50 yards from a Ransom Rest. I added a KKM "drop in"** barrel and the group size at 50 yards went down to ten ring off-hand. This was shooting Hornady 115 FMJ ammunition from a long time ago (20th century).sixftunda wrote:Reading this makes me wanna put my Beretta back to bone stock and see how it shoots. I'm now shooting an early model Sam's Beretta that I acquired from a friend's estate. It has a Barsto barrel and fires less than ten ring at 50 yards from a rest. I also expect it to stay accurate for much longer than my other one.
To another, related, point: To decide what gun/work to acquire, you must first decide what "being competitive" means to you, the individual. Does it mean chasing points to become Distinguished or does it mean winning matches you enter, and at what level? Will you still fire Service Pistol after you get Distinguished or are you just after the badge? If you just want points and to be Distinguished, you can do it inexpensively with a gun that won't necessarily last. If you intend to be competitive, including at the National level, put the money in now to have a gun that will last and allow you to be competitive at all levels.
* I added a trigger stop early on, but made no other modifications. Of course this had nothing to do with accuracy, but added to the shootability.
** Although it was a drop in barrel, I had to tap it a bit with a mallet the first time. I expect that subsequent firing will loosen the fit and undoubtedly the groups will enlarge.
