9MM RO - 38 Super or 38 Special? Empty 9MM RO - 38 Super or 38 Special?

Post by KB2MBC 2/9/2018, 6:48 pm

So I picked up a RO in 9mm with the intent of re-barreling it to a 38 Super using a Kart Xact-Fit barrel.
As I was going over their price list I see they offer a 38 Special too. Can anyone tell me what pitfalls I may experience with the 38 Special route?
Actually, pitfalls of either route would be helpful.
Thanks for your time.

Both will require opening up the breech face to get cartridge to chamber. 38 spl requires more removal because larger diameter rim. 38 spl mags require tuning to feed most of the time.
38 spl build shouldn't be your first rodeo!

With the RO, Len ( I think) and I found that using the .38 super comp brass we didn't have to open the breech face.
We may just have been lucky.

A gunsmith I know who does 1911 38 specials was telling me that he liked starting out with 38 super's because of the breech face.  He was also saying that there are fewer choices to start with in CA.

You won't need to open the breech if you use 38 Super Comp brass. The 38 Super Comp are rimless versions of the 38 Super and they are narrower (0.386") than 9mm Luger (0.390").

It was not luck. Just because we didn't find out the brass we were using was the reason it worked so well until afterwards is just one of those fiddly bit details. My RO does work with the regular size brass. Now, that was luck. I also have some 38 Super+P brass that works but I separated it out to only use with the 40S&W I converted to a Super. No worry about breach face there.

Go with the .38 super barrel and use super comp brass.  Probably a lot easier than getting .38 special to work reliably in mags.
