Scope/Red Dot for a new rifle
Folks,
I am buying my first rifle - a Galil Ace in 7.62x39. The rifle fits my needs very well. I need an advice on what sight system to put on this rifle. It comes with great iron sights and I would like to add a Red Dot, or a Red Dot with magnifier, or a scope. Here's where I am stuck and don't know how to even begin the selection process.
Intended use - target practice, home defense, SHTF, perhaps even hunting when I get good enough with it.
Thanks for your advice.

An Osprey 1-6 would probably be on my short list for the type of rifle you're looking at
1X works good up close & 6X is about all you need (depending on quality of ammo) for the useable range of 7.62x39.
If you decide you need more, you're not out a lot of cash for the trial.

for a simple dot, look at Primary Arms,
inexpensive, relatively and good quality

If you can afford it get a quality red dot like the Aimpoint Pro. Or you can go with a 1-4x or 1-6x but they aren't as easy to use shooting 2 eyes open.
Fyi I just ordered a Aimpoint Pro from Optics Planet for $366 with RDT12 coupon code. These sell used for upwards of $350 on eBay so its a very good buy.

Re: Scope/Red Dot for a new rifle
Thanks for the advice, guys. Having read today about the bewildering variety of scopes and how to mount them, I think that for some time I will stick to the iron sights, and maybe mount one of my Ultradots to try the rifle with a Red Dot. My rod & club's rifle range is no more than 150 yards, so I will not likely be shooting at longer distances.

I hear that the Aimpoint 9000sc is a great scope

That looks like the perfect choice of rifle to match a Valdada edge. I put one on my 25-2 but it would have worked/looked better with your choice. Looks are important...

Len, how does Valdada compare to Ultradots (I have the 1 inch model, several of them on my pistols) and to Aimpoint? Aimpoint may be an unfair comparison due to the price difference but I will ask anyway.

I took the ultradot off my 25-2 and put the Valdada on. I like the clear optics and no image reduction. It has worked great so far but not a lot of rounds thru it this winter. I could wish the turret was adjustable to read zero at a known yardage but it is an easy work around. Size and weight less then the 9000sc.
