Raising Shoulder Upward Toward Cheek?
So I see some top shooters lift their shoulders upward toward their cheek. I normally don't, but I figured I'd give it a try a few times.
Maybe it's because my shoulder is weaker, or I'm just not used to it, but I'm not seeing any benefit...just increased tension and fatigue in my shoulder.
What's the theory behind it?

I think that's a Marine Corps thing. Not sure why. I'm as curious as you are.

This is a case of whatever works. Based on your various muscle conditions, it could go any way the stronger set of muscles work the best.

I took a moment to look up muscle names. Never mind that. It's too complicated.
Just do your pushups, Military press, and rowing machine exercises. A lot of tennis helps too.

Re: Raising Shoulder Upward Toward Cheek?
The main reason I was told (by a 2660+ HM who actually does it), the cheek in shoulder stance helps ensure he has the same stance each time. He is very big on having the same stance, grip, etc. every time (as should we all). i.e. This gives him a consist and repeatable stance and position. He also mentioned it aids some with recoil/recovery management. His stance is also a full 'duelist' stance. He calls it full bladed to the target.
I have tried it, and like mpolans, it added extra tension and discomfort to certain muscles in my arm and neck. But being in my late 60's could be the reason for that.

Sanderson always did it that way but many other top shooters do not.
It also goes back to the question on wrist and head angle

Re: Raising Shoulder Upward Toward Cheek?
I always heard it tightens the arm and wrist making it more like one unit.

I was having trouble with my arm getting a little loose as I progressed into the sustained fire string. A friend, who was a 2650+ shooter, told me to raise my shoulder to cure it. Guess what, it did.

Re: Raising Shoulder Upward Toward Cheek?
Phil, how far did you find that you have to raise your shoulder? Just a little? Or until you made contact with jaw/cheek? Thanks.PMcfall wrote:I was having trouble with my arm getting a little loose as I progressed into the sustained fire string. Re: Raising Shoulder Upward Toward Cheek?
Just raised the shoulder until my arm tightened. I shoot with my head upright so it would be difficult to get it to my cheek. obviously everyone is built differently and some may be able to weld the two, but I don't think its necessary.

So how much improvement did you see on SF and short line average scores from this one change?
Thanks

Biggest difference for me, was the 4th and 5th shots on short line. With the arm tight, shots were 9's and 10's and when it was starting to loosen, 8's and 9's with a rare 7.
