Question on N310 Empty Question on N310

Post by lablover Fri Oct 18, 2019 2:14 pm

Is N 310 ok to use on lead Bullets?  I was informed at one time that it’s not the best choice for lead.  I just want to get other opinions on the case.  Coated and Jacketed I’m sure is fine but not sure about bare lead traditional wax lubed Bullets.

Thank a bunch

No issues, almost same load as Bullseye, burns cleaner, more expensive.  Several people I shoot with won't use anything else.  I have never used it I have too much WST, Clays & Bullseye in inventory.

Check out the loads sticky.

3.85 gr VV310, 200 Oregon Trail LSW, WLP, decent brass = really good groups, clean shooting, no leading and under 20 SD for me (some batches / barrels have single digit SD).  14 to 16 # spring for frame mount, lower for slide mount.

YMMV.  See load recipe.

Just drop in a 180 OT LSW for the short line.

Great info sir!  I have a slide mounted dot so maybe drop spring weights to like 10-12 lbs

It's my go to powder right now for everything 45ACP, including and especially lead. I do shoot coated but I was using the powder when I was shooting "regular" lead.

Burns cleaner than Bullseye, very consistent.  One of the few (only?) better would be Vectan Ba10.

Confirming Steve Turner's suggested 4.40gr of N310 under Brazos 160gr Coated SWC.  Excellent load for 50' indoor and 25Y outdoor accuracy and recoil wise.

Question on N310 Empty Re: Question on N310

Post by spursnguns Sun Oct 20, 2019 12:31 am

Hello,

Not wanting to be the contrarian.  VV N310 was my go to powder for several years.  I eventually came to the conclusion that it is too temperature sensitive for me....when the temperature drops and the velocity drops.  I keep a stash of it but have moved on to other powders.

Question on N310 Empty Re: Question on N310

A lot of the temperature issues with VV310 may be taken care of by using Winchester Large Pistol Primers (which are rated for standard and magnum loads).  I used Federal large pistol primers in my ammunition for this weekend and I had function issues at temperatures that I never had issues before with Winchester primers.  Also make sure you have a good crimp.

Just speaking from my actual experiences.

Hello CR10X,

Winchester Large Pistol Primers has been my standard for many years, nonetheless you are spot on with both recommendations.  I didn't really want to change powders so I ended up developing two separate loads (one for warm temperatures and one for cool temperatures).  The only difference was in their recoil impulse.  I like to keep things simple so I eventually just moved on.  Nonetheless, VV N310 once dialed in can produce some superbly accurate loads.

#1 for this load in my slide mount wad gun.  Was having an unpleasant time with the drops I was getting with Clay's a couple of months back, and CR mentioned this.  Runs great and (for me) it groups well.

Question on N310 Empty Re: Question on N310

Post by lablover Wed Oct 23, 2019 8:09 pm

Ordered a small batch of the Oregon trail 200s and 180s as well as some 38 158gr rn for DR.  I have to say those were the best well packed bullets I’ve ever seen!!!

Bullets look fabulous compared to what I’ve seen with other casters.  I will say they are some serious hard Bullets!

Any disadvantages to a real hard cast bullet?

1500 bullets total and not a single dent in the boxes..smaller boxes put in individual tyvek bags and each bag put into another box and then all smaller boxes put in one last bigger box!  That’s shipping!

Only disadvantage is that you have to have them at or larger than groove diameter. For 45 that would be .452.

Question on N310 Empty Re: Question on N310

Regardless of the look, I true-size all coated/cast bullets.  Use to do it with Lee sizers, but recently switched to Lubrisizer without the lube thing.  I ordered 0.452" (and 0.357" and 0.358") custom sizing die for it (no lube holes, and it is slightly longer then standard die) from Magma.  I size base down pushing on the nose of the bullet, then cull by visual inspection.  Sometimes I also measure base and sort by weight within 0.500gr.

I have had temperature issues with N310 at around 40-45 degrees as it wouldn't cycle the gun. Other than that it shot great, no problems.

Question on N310 Empty Re: Question on N310

Post by djw1cav Fri Nov 15, 2019 2:40 pm

I used N310 when loading for my 45 with good results.  I no longer use my 45.  Bad hands have caused me to move on to the softer shooting 38 special.  I have been using WST with good results but I have been wondering if I could use up my 6 pounds of N310 on the 38.  Does anyone use N310 on Model 52 loads?

I run 3.8 gr N310 with the Zero 185gr SWCHP bullet, crimp at .469-470.  No issues at any temperature when using magnum primers.  It's a soft short line load.
