Question on N310 - Page 2 Empty Question on N310

Post by lablover Fri Oct 18, 2019 1:14 pm

First topic message reminder :

Is N 310 ok to use on lead Bullets?  I was informed at one time that it’s not the best choice for lead.  I just want to get other opinions on the case.  Coated and Jacketed I’m sure is fine but not sure about bare lead traditional wax lubed Bullets.

Thank a bunch

Some revolver guys have stated that N310 didn't perform well in 38 spl w/ 148 WC bullets.  WST is one of the favorites among the PPC crowd.

DON’T!... In the 38 Special there is only old data from Vihtavouri and the data shows that you can go from standard to +P pressures VERY quickly with 310.  For this reason Vhitavouri no longer recommends the use of 310 for wadcutters.  Not that the 52 couldn’t handle +P pressures, but the bullet might blow the top and leave the skirt in the barrel.  Then the next round would destroy your 52.

There really are better powders.  Sell or trade off what you gave remain.

3.85 gr VV310, 200 Oregon Trail LSW, WLP, decent brass = really good groups, clean shooting, no leading and under 20 SD for me (some batches / barrels have single digit SD).  14 to 16 # spring for frame mount, lower for slide mount.

YMMV.  See load recipe.

Just drop in a 180 OT LSW for the short line.

#1 for this load in my slide mount wad gun.  Was having an unpleasant time with the drops I was getting with Clay's a couple of months back, and CR mentioned this.  Runs great and (for me) it groups well.

Can I ask what recoil spring you are using in that slide mounted gun?  I was having a few issues at 12 lbs so went to 11 pounds..got worse!  Tonight I went to 13 lbs and it ran like a champ!  Even functioned my buddy’s 3.8 of clays.

I believe it's running a 9 lb slide spring and a 14 lb main spring at the moment.  I may experiment with a couple different springs in order to increase the slide spring a little.  I got caught out of battery a couple times on cold days.

Wow!.  I thought the reason might be that the N310 was too fast but I had no idea that it would be dangerous too.  Looks like I will be selling my N310.

I would not sell it , trade for WST or BE. Excellent powder for 45acp.
