CMP Legal Sights on GI 1911
All,
I needed a new gun for night stand duty, so I picked up a RIA GI 1911. I figured I would keep it CMP legal in case I ever want to do that.
What can I do to the gun to keep it CMP legal? I'd like to put better sights on it, what are my options there?
Thanks!
dsd

target iron sights are allowed. If you go to the CMP website, you can download the competition rules, and there is a handy table which details what can and can't be done to a cmp hardball competition pistol.

Externally you can have installed an adjustable rear sight and matching fixed front sight. You can have the mainspring housing (arched or flat) and front strap stippled or checkered. Everything else externally must remain stock. Internally, you can have the frame and slide tightened. You can have that done conventionally or you can have Krieger Accu-rails installed. You can add a match barrel and bushing. You can have a long, short or skeletonized trigger with built-in stop installed. You can have a higher quality sear/ hammer (must look like original) installed. You can use a different recoil spring and/ or mainspring. You can have the gun blued, parkerized or plated. The gun can be stainless steel as well. The trigger pull weight must be no less than 4 lbs. I probably left out some things, but this gives you an idea.

Can I change the front and rear sight cuts and still be legal? This was a little confusing on the CMP page.
Thanks!

Yes. If you have the slide dovetailed for sights, that's not a problem.

off topic a little but.... if you had a SA range officer... removed the hammer and beaver tail and put GI ones will that work? the shape would still be different. it wouldn't have a point like the GI more rounded.
they that picky?

As I understand it, the frame is allowed to be modified to accept a Beavertail Grip Safety but a GI Safety must be used. I believe they changed this as so many platforms made a frame change for the beavertail.
