Some rough statistics of Hammerli target disks
I always have the impression that the target disks comes with 28/215 is better than I saw from a Trailside, but would like to confirm how far it is the difference. I randomly picked some photos from internet and following are results.
It seems 208/215’s group is much more consistent, while 6” barrel Trailside has similar best results but more deviation (maybe a QC thing? Some groups are good with one flier) The 4.5” barrel version of Trailside on the other hand, seems worse than both.

Personally, I don't put much faith in test targets. I think that the factories use the best bullets and shoot the groups a few times to obtain the best possible 5 shot group. Honestly, the idea of a 5 or 10 shot group is statistically nonsensical, but people seem to like them. They will all shoot 10s if you can.

I toured the Hammerli factory in 1994. I watched them do the test buttons and had an opportunity to make one myself. They truthfully shoot the five shot group and call it quits. They actually use a machinist vise and place the pistol in the vise upside down to shoot their groups. They had Underground test tunnel.

Hi Jon,
That’s really cool experience! Do you know what ammo they were using? And I wonder if they would reject any gun if they got bad group from test?
Thanks

That's very cool and good to hear. I doubt that all companies do that. I can't see Les Baer with their 1.5" guarantee shooting 5 shots and if they're not within 1.5", tearing the gun apart and starting over. Anyway, I'm getting cynical in my old age, but to the other point, a 5 shot group is statistically meaningless. That said, I always chose the gun with the best looking test group. Okay, I'm a cynical hypocrite.Jon Eulette wrote:I toured the Hammerli factory in 1994. I watched them do the test buttons and had an opportunity to make one myself. As we know Hammerli tested at 25m. I'm sure the Marvel groups would be very good at 25m.
Joel you made my day; "Okay, I'm a cynical hypocrite"
