Red dot vs green dot?
Many sights are now offered with either red or green dots. I'm in the market for .22lr and would like to make an informed choice.
General consensus suggests green for my older eyes (74) with astigmatism to give sharper image and quicker pick-up. Are there any authoritative articles on the topic?

Re: Red dot vs green dot?
There is some "color science" in the details of these articles about red vs green LASERs that only sort of applies to a discussion of dots. Other than these shooting magazine articles from 2011, I've found no other references. I'm hoping that crowd sourcing the question here will pique the interest of a shooting-opthomologist to help us out.

This last article is also about LASERs, from a non-shooting source. The eye science is good, though.

Most discussion of dot color in all types of dot sights include anecdotal experiences of the author, sometimes supported by a short reference to eye science by the non-specialist.
I'm hoping there's a professional study lurking in the wild that will miraculously pop up. I can always hope, can't I?

Re: Red dot vs green dot?
Dr. Joe Logar presented a paper on red lasers and green lasers at the last NRA Annual Meeting in Indianapolis (Riflleman, Mar 2020, pg 24). I submitted a question to him through the NRA.org website to see what he might contribute to the discussion of dot color. I'll post his response if I get one.

Re: Red dot vs green dot?
I have not rec'd a response, so cannot post an authoritative comparison.
Anecdotally, I have replaced a 3.25 moa red dot RM06/2 with a 2 moa green dot HE508T on a lever action rifle I snap shoot for deep woods hunting at ranges averaging 25-75 yds.
Both are self-adjusting or manually adjustable for brightness. I manually adjust for slightly brighter than ambient light.
With my 74-year old eyes, shooting RH through a single vision distance prescription lens to correct for my astigmatism in my right eye, the green is much easier to pick up and aim with, even though the dot is 1/3 smaller. With thiis experience in mind I intend to replace the red dot with a green dot on my .22 target gun (the only one I still shoot in my club matches) to see if I can squeeze out a few more points.

Why not start by getting corrective glasses to remove the astigmatism?Bruce in WV wrote:......for my older eyes (74) with astigmatism to give sharper image and quicker pick-up.......
If you're shooting indoors, rather than in bright sunlight, there are sights available that you can switch back and forth from green to red.

Thanks for the link.
I guess I didn't write that clearly enough: the glasses correct the astigmatism very well. The dot is perfectly clear.
