Problems with 32 S&W in a Dillon SDB Empty Problems with 32 S&W in a Dillon SDB

Thought I had failed to insert the case properly in the shell plate and the case stuck in the die.  Got the size die cleaned out.  Started loading and another case stuck.   The experience fooling with the first failure prompted me to remove the loader head first.  It was then I saw that I had not failed to insert the case properly but the case rim pulled off.  Any experience with such happenings out there?  My plan is to sort cases and cull the ones whose headstamp matches the bad one.  I'll note the name on the case head when I start back playin with it.

Yeah that can happen. I got frustrated and bought Starline brass but I think Dave Wilson said he uses a different brand that works better. I did not have a problem once I started using the Starline. I was using a SDB

Greetings,

What die do you refer to?

Sizing die, expander die, etc...

What brand of brass?

New brass, once-fired?

What bullet are you planning to load?

Cheers,

Dave

Size die.  Lube?  SDB die is carbide...  Once fired brass.  At this point the bullet planned is moot.  " I'll note the name on the case head when I start back playing with it."

you need to lube the cases. carbide doesn't matter in this case.

Thought I might resort to that.  FWIW I've loaded 100s if not 1000s dry on this loader and never had an issue...  JT does write that he lubes all his cases prior to sizing.  I've personally taken to that with 44 Special and 45 Colt straight wall cases and carbide sizers.

been there done that with SDB. 32swl and 38Sp and the only cases I lube. Actually I am starting to lightly lube 45acp because of using a two step powder drop that sticks and slows down the operation. putting the cases in a big bag and mixing them around  while spraying gets enough inside to slick up the powder drop station on my 550 and 650.
never had a problem doing this, i'm sure someone will see this as the worst thing a person can do. oh well, works for me.

I only run carbide dies and I lube everything with Hornady One Shot, it just makes the press run better.  Carbide keeps the dies from wearing out but it doesn't eliminate friction.

Dillon has both non-carbide and carbide dies for the SDB.
He runs carbide dies and wasn't using case lube.

FWIW For the SDB Dillon says, "...carbide dies (except for 44/40, which uses steel dies)"

While carbide dies are often touted as “no lube required”, they sure work better if you lube your cases.  For that reason I process brass THEN wet tumble to remove lube.  After that it’s straightforward to load on a progressive.  Sure, it’s twice through the machine but life is much easier.
