Any interest in a Lane Commands App?
First topic message reminder :
I am thinking of writing or funding an iphone app that integrates lane commands with a visual countdown timer.
Basically, you would hit the "Timed Fire" button and the Timed Fire Range commands would be spoken, there would be a beep, and then a countdown timer is visible on the phone. When it hits zero, another beep. There would be a slow fire and rapid fire button as well.
My plan would be to have this as a free app for Apple iOS products. Is anyone interested in this, or is it just me?
Let me know before I waste time/money doing this.
Best,
dsd

Re: Any interest in a Lane Commands App?
I've published a new version of my "Bullseye Timer" Android app (1.2). It's currently being pushed through Google Play servers and should be available shortly for installs and upgrades.
Couple of new features added:
- continuous "loop" mode for training (loops through the current string of fire until either "Stop" button pressed or "loop" mode is deselected);
- one shot drill (full "ready" sequence followed by target facing for 2 seconds);
- two shots drill (full "ready" sequence followed by target facing for 4 seconds);
I did not have time for major interface re-design. The new drills are selectable in a similar way as slow/timed/rapid (the list of radio buttons is scrollable now). The loop mode may be selected/deselected at any time (does not interrupt running string). Selecting a new drill (string of fire) aborts the running string/drill immediately (same effect if pressing the "stop" button).
Enjoy...

Anatoly,
Can you write one for Windows Phone and submit it to Windows Phone Marketplace?

Re: Any interest in a Lane Commands App?
Anatoly,
I passed your application around to the Air Force Team and have gotten nothing but positive comments on it. Very few phone applications provide to be useful.
3 suggestions:
1. Add timing drills to the app, such as the drills in the Marine's "Red Book". I can provide you with some via email if your interested.
2. Allow users to input scores and export them to a spreadsheet. You could have 2 different input methods. If you created some "Match Mode", users could input scores without the training aids, creating dual functions for the app.
3. Add the Air Force Team logo on the app.
BTW, are you prior USAF? Thanks.

Re: Any interest in a Lane Commands App?
Thank you for the suggestions!
1. Yes, I'm interested. So far, I've added only one and two shot drills with 2s and 4s timings (as per your suggestion). But I think, they supposed to be 1s and 3s (if I remember correctly what Brian Zins was telling us in his BE clinic).
2. I was planning to either create a scoring app or add some scoring features to this app just to help me to keep track of my matches. Something with a quick input method (not just a table) that would be useable while scoring downrange without holding the entire line... But it's a second priority.
3. I've never been in USAF. So, adding a logo of something that I'm not associated with is not a good idea...

I downloaded your app as well onto my Droid. Functions great, great audio, easy to use. Any Bullseye Shooter with a smart phone is going to want these apps! Thanks again to both you and Anatoly.
Thanks. Care to rate it on the Google Play site?

Re: Any interest in a Lane Commands App?
For the iPhone version (in Apple Approval land), if we can come to a consensus on what the drills should be I can add those.
There is a great app on iPhone called "ShootersDiary" [url=https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shooters-diary/id526025065?mt=8[/url] that has all the tracking stuff you could want. Honestly, it's better than what I could come up with.

Re: Any interest in a Lane Commands App?
Dave,
Thank you for the link to the "Shooters Diary" app.
I know, there is an Android CMP app... but it's not free ($5) and the features are not exactly what I would want in an application like that. A generic "diary" app that may also be used for shooting diary is Evernote available on all mobile platforms.

It was a good joke.
Re: Any interest in a Lane Commands App?
UPDATE: After a week in review, the App was rejected for metadata issues. I have adjusted and resubmitted.
I will keep you all posted.

Re: Any interest in a Lane Commands App?
Very cool!! I just tried the I phone version with muffs on and I can clearly hear the commands in the next room. Thank you for pulling this together, very thoughtful.

Range commands app
Your range command app is outstanding. I loaded it on my Iphone and it works great. It is most appreciated. THE TIMMING ON THE COMMANDS AND THE BUZZER ARE SPOT ON.
Thanks

Re: Any interest in a Lane Commands App?
Thanks and please keep feedback coming, including feature requests such as drills. I still don't understand them but am open to a script.
Also, please leave feedback on iTunes or google play-- it is much appreciated.
This project has been fun and I look forward to seeing its use and where it takes us.
Thank you all for the encouragement to do this!

Thank you!
Thank you!
Re: Any interest in a Lane Commands App?
ddivins,
I used the range commands app on my Iphone today. I put the ear buds under my earmuffs, it worked great!
I shot 100 rounds of rapid fire and through repetition I got some things figured out.
After about four 5 shot drills I could clearly see I was having problems with trigger control - it seemed like I was jerking the trigger because I was not able to get the dot settled back in the black.
Good training tool!
Thanks,
Art

Re: Any interest in a Lane Commands App?
Great app, I love it!
What would make it even better is if it could record time intervals between the shots in rapid and timed fire strings. There's one app called Shot Timer, that I use for this purpose, but it does not have lane commands. It would be nice to have this option available in the Bullseye Commands app.

This was mentioned before. The biggest issue I see on this, besides the actual coding :-), is how to get shot timers to work at an indoor range with others on the line. I only have access to indoor ranges and when I practice there is usually a guy with a .223 or .308 somewhere on the line and no amount of microphone isolation will pick up my .22 over that boom.
As an FYI, Version 2.0 has been submitted to Apple and cleans up the audio as well as adds drill strings (as well as some UI cleanup). Be on the lookout for it as an update in the next week.
Best,
dsd

I agree, it is a problem, but perhaps it could be addressed at least partially by adding controls for volume threshold and overall sensitivity.
Re: Any interest in a Lane Commands App?
As someone who participates in practical shooting (USPSA) as well as bullseye, shot timers are used when there is only one shooter on the line (or shooting a "stage"). Different stages may be shot at the same time but they are separated by berms or other means of separation. When two stages are set up in an indoor range, the shooting must be staggered, not only for safety but also because the timers will pick up both shooters. Therefore, such an inclusion would require its use where there is no other shooter in close proximity. Then it could be useful.
