Scope/Dot mount for STI
I am going to give Bullseye a try this year- finally and formally. An outdoor club near me now has it on a night I can attend, so in May I'm going to be shooting weekly. The guys told me it's very low pressure and they would love to have new members. I will use my Buckmark with it's red dot.
My issues is I have an STI Trojan 5" in .45, with a trigger job from Brazos. Shoots very well, but I'm not going to invest in a dedicated wad gun as what I have is waaaaay better than I am right now. I have used this gun just for fun plinking and steel plates. I would however like to put a red dot sight on it. Can I get recommendations for a mount? Is there ANYTHING that I could do myself, or am I certainly looking at shipping it off to a gunsmith? There are no smiths I know of near me that I trust.
What about the Clark Docter, is that "bolt on?" What about a grip mounted device? Thank you so much, in advance. I'm excited to give this a try. Seems like a beautiful form of self torture and mental abuse.

I like a slide mounted rail, but when I was getting started, I tried a grip mount (pain in the butt to clear a malfunction). It is adequate. I also tried a Burris Fast Fire 2. It doesn't have "click" adjustments for elevation and windage, but it had a really nice dot, and the automatic brightness was great.
Slide mounted rail installed by a gunsmith (there are many on this forum) with a Brand new 1" Ultradot from Larrys guns is definitely worth the investment. No need to upgrade from there.

Thank you Rob. I have a hard time even finding some of these parts online. Can anyone recommend a few trusted smiths on this board I might send or drive my gun to? I'm in upstate NY near Binghamton. Thank you much for your help.

I don't know anyone in NY. You would have to ship at least the slide to all of the smiths I know. I recommend K.C. Crawford (Semper Fi). He is also on this forum.

I have installed a Weigand frame mount myself. You can purchase the mount and drill jig together. It took me about 6 hours total time to install it. I was very very careful. I dry fit things numerous times and then took it to the range for function testing. When that was done I again took everything apart, cleaned all the parts in my ultrasonic parts cleaner to remove and dirt and oil, and then reassembled with red loc-tite.
I would have used a slide mount but I have a Springfield RO and a good portion of the slide is cut out for the rear target sight. I can also load down to 3.6 grains of Bullseye because there is no extra weight on the slide.
