S&W M52 and Optics
I know theres a lot of S&W Model 52 talk going on right now - I decided to purchase one. It's going to be a toy for now. I am curious though.. the people that own them tell me it's a soft and slow feeling recoil.. I've seen optic mounts for the 52 where I can attach an Ultradot. Will the gun even cycle with the added weight of a 1'' Ultradot?

Most use the Larry's frame mount that attaches to the weight rail. Adds weight but not to the slide.

I have a 30mm UltraDot on my 52 w/ BME mount ( S&W52-RR ) and it shoots the standard load of 2.7 grains of BE under a 148 grain WC with no problem.

Jason, if you want the frame mount, I now have two. One came as a spare part with my gun, and I bought another one because that way I got all the screws and instructions. As to how much $$, I'll leave that up to you. There is no chance I'll ever use them. The gun at the right below now has a Vortex Venom sight, which is plenty good for me. Just leave me a PM with your address, and I'll send the parts to you.
If your new 52 has a perfect finish, the I've been told the frame mount messes up the finish.
If I remember correctly, LenV here in the forum has at least one of them, and knows how they fit and work.

After I did some poking around on this forum for 52 info - and maybe a thread from a link you shared somewhere - I saw the picture of the frame mount Len used and where the bluing got messed a little. I appreciate the idea and offer but I'm gonna pass on that design. Thank you

The BME mount uses brass pads on the set screw to all but eliminate bluing damage.

BME makes excellent mounts for the Model 52. I tried both during my "52 Phase". Sold them both to forum members and the gun too!
A truly lovely gun. Very glad that I had the opportunity to own and shoot one.
Very picky about ammo, a bit of a PITA to reload for (much like a 32ACP Pardini!).
But no longer a truly competitive tool. IMHO.

I bought the Vortex Venom from you, along with the mount - worked out great. I appreciate all the help you gave me.radjag wrote:BME makes excellent mounts for the Model 52. I tried both during my "52 Phase". Sold them both to forum members and the gun too!

Regarding "competitive", for me, that's irrelevant. I doubt I'll ever catch up with the capability of the gun.
Actually, seems to me the scores people got with the 52's years ago would still be competitive today.

Re: S&W M52 and Optics
The problem with the 52 was that it was a bit of a crapshoot. If the gun was fitted well, it shot very well. If it was towards the minimum acceptance level, perhaps not so much. But the real issue was that you couldn’t do much if it didn’t shoot well.

I use the BME mount which slides into the weight grooves. Works great. Only thing is when you thoroughly clean the pistol you may need to take the mount off and subsequently need to re-zero. Not a problem as re-zero adjustments are minor, I just count the rotations to loosen the set screw or better yet precision re-torque and record the setting.
