1911 parts for new build
Sorry, i'm sure similar topics have 1k post spread around this forum but i can't find a list of components a Current Bullseye Gun Smith would use on there personal 1911 wadgun. I have already decided on a Jem frame and slide, KC's sear/hammer and Kart barrel. But what about all the other pins, trigger, guide rod, ect... Do all the popular smiths in our discipline use the same parts?

Please don’t laugh but I think a good Smith could take just about any parts made today and build a X ring 50 yard pistol. I believe the secret to the great shooters are the hand fitting of the barrel, bushing, lugs, slide, and frame. All the other parts are personal preference and only add the the smoothness of the trigger pull and such.

As for me, I leave it up to the gunsmith, except for grip safety. Typically, they have a preference based on frame or experience. He knows what works for him for the build and I've learned my limitations.

I thought the OP was building his own.
Could be wrong, in which case, let the smith decide

Wilson Combat makes excellent parts. I would stay away from stainless hammers ... they do not feel right.

You are correct and that was my point, in a round about way. Gunsmiths that have built guns have preferences and experience on their side (and a lot of that probably comes from bad experiences). So, asking a general list might not be as informative as direct discussions with a more experienced group. And so, let the gunsmith decide!

LOL, that is why i asked what the gunsmiths were using not a general list.

I want to build the gun with parts that are preferred by our gunsmiths

ASchlem, first thanks for understanding the joking aspect of my response! After listening to gunsmiths and reading posts for years, even they have different preferences. Have fun with your build!

You've made your decision on the truly important parts. My rule of thumb would be look for bar stock parts for the balance. Pin sets that are through hardened and then ground on a swiss machine (EGW), triggers I like Harrison Design, beavertail I use EGW. Guide rod, are you going to use a GI rod or a full length rod? If full length I would recommend a 2 piece and regardless I would also use EGW. Are you sensing a trend here?

KC, how do you feel about Dawson parts? They seem to be very good quality and zero complaints from 2011 and STI crowd. I have their pins, guide plug and plunger set. Seem to be very well hardened, but can't compare machining and finish to EGW as I never owned EGW parts. Any insight? Price is comparable to EGW.

I've used some of Dawson's parts in the past. But it was sights and magazines. Have no knowledge of actual gun parts from them.
Re: 1911 parts for new build
+1 on EGW
+1 on KC Roll
Greider Precision trigger (easiest to fit)
Harrison trigger (toughest)
Get a true radius sear jig.
The KC trigger has a really amazing roll but if you are less then a master you might lose the roll. The True radius jib will do a perfect roll and a very nice short roll for cheap.
If you need an extra sear or two extreme engineering makes a great ultra lightweight sear that is sort of rolled to start and they are very hard and way better than C&S.
Wilson 2 piece guide rod
EGW bushing
Kart or KKM Barrel
Do not skimp on the pins shitty pins can ruin a trigger job or frame.
Whatever KC and Jon says is 99.999999% right everyone else has an opinion.

Re: 1911 parts for new build
This build is definitely on. I spoke with the company that uses the frame style I like and there is no way i would do business with him, enough said about that. I may send the gun to KC, John, or Sams for the fitting of the barrel. I would like to do the majority of the work myself, but i also want it to be the most accurate gun in my bullseye box.

Re: 1911 parts for new build
I have a kkm 1:13 and a Kart on the way. I'm going to do some more research about cone barrels. I think i will rebarrel my bear wad gun that way. If I like it I wil do it again on the complete build. Can't wait to get started.
