Primer size Empty Primer size

Post by Texasref Sat Jan 16, 2021 8:15 am

Will small rifle primers fit/operate the same as small pistol primers?
I feel I should know the answer to this but I don't.

Thanks in advance to replies.

Greetings,

A while back I tested Small Pistol, Small Pistol Magnum, Small Rifle, and Small Rifle BenchRest primers loaded in the 32 S&W Long with 98 grain HBWC wadcutter bullets.

All primers had the same average velocity with 20 shot groups recorded.

There was one exception. The Winchester Small Pistol Magnum primer did elevate the average velocity by 30 FPS.

All the groups were inside the Ten Ring at 50 yards.

So, in summary, I would not hesitate to use Small Rifle Primers.

Cheers,

Dave

Understand that they may be harder to ignite due to thicker cup material!

USPSA Open Class shooters have used SRP in "overpressure" loads!

The video I posted goes over that.  One of the guys here has tried small rifle primers in his Giles .38 Special 1911 (no problems) and his P210 (light primer strikes).

Many thanks to you all for answering my question.
I'll load a few and make sure I can avoid the light strikes.

Addressing the thicker cup issue, I did find a couple boxes of Remington 6 1/2 SRP’s on the shelf a while back and grabbed them thinking “beats nothin”... Doing the ever productive & definitive internet research after the fact I read conflicting reports as to whether they could be used for 223. I was flabbergasted I tell you! That aside, perhaps they would be more useful in pistol casesat their lower pressures?

They can be used in 223, but the allowable pressures will limit you to not much more than 222 velocities.
