30mm scope rings
I know some others have griped about using the provided ultradot scope rings on the .45 wadgun. I used weigand weaver style rings for my one inch...getting a 30mm and the weigand is no longer available. What other weaver style, 30mm, less than a hundred bucks scope rings is everyone using?

Re: 30mm scope rings
I have used the UD supplied rings on my .45s for years. Both 30mm and 1". Slide mounts for all of them. I've never had any problems. As long as you tighten the bottom screw first you are in good shape.

Agree; no problems with the UD rings on my slide mounts.

Re: 30mm scope rings
I have been using 2 solutions.
1 - Millett angle loc steel rings
2 - threaded insert into the supplied UD rings

Re: 30mm scope rings
I had the UD rings come loose on 1 of my 3 wadguns - slide mounts and I did tighten the lower screw first.
I had good luck with Burris Zee rings.

Do Not waste your money on the B-Square rings. Inadequately designed, especially when used on a 45.

Pilot,
I use blue loctite on the ring screws and red loctite on the mount to the gun screws. It only takes a tiny amount.
I clean the threads turning the screws in a patch wet with alcohol.

Leapers makes 30 mm rings in low, med and high mount. I switched from the UD rings to 30 mm low mount Leapers as the dot tube would rotate in the UD rings. Optics Planet carries Leapers and the cost is low.

Re: 30mm scope rings
I Have used the Burris rings. The only complaint is they don't come in low (in 30mm) and are a bit heavy. I have some of the B-Square's mentioned and their quality is suspect.
Any problems I have had over the yrs w/ loosening or turning have been solved by using a paper insert in the ring and under the base. I also use red & blue Loctite as directed earlier in this thread.
The Leapers mentioned sound good as they are available in low. I strongly prefer the scope as near the bore as possible. I have a TS-25 on a Marvel and like it a lot. I am a different case than most with age & arthritis now a factor!?
For paper stock I use currency. Ones are OK for an ordinary fellow shooting ordinary pistols, as I do, but Hammerli's, Feinwekbau's, & etc might require something like 50's or even 100's!

Re: 30mm scope rings
DON'T USE RED LOCTITE!!!
Most red Loctite formulations are intended to be PERMANENT. If you need to remove the screw, you need to heat the firearm significantly to get the Loctite to release. This can damage the finish. If you don't heat it, depending on the metallurgy of your barrel, either the threads on the screws or in the hole come out, or the head breaks off or you strip the fastener when you crank on it hard enough.

Note on the chart at the end of the text it states heat is required for disassembly! We don't need that much holding power....

Re: 30mm scope rings
I've used red loctite on scope mounts and motorcycles and other things for 40 years.
Normally it just requires a bit extra torque but on scope mounts I just warm the screwheads with a soldering iron and they come out like they were greased. I've done this a few times with no ill effects.
Like I said it just takes a tiny amount.
If you're concerned use blue loctite.

Re: 30mm scope rings
There is a purple loctite available. It is the weakest, but I could only find it on the internet. Great for small screws or screws with fine threads that you want to remove later.

Re: 30mm scope rings
Vortex makes a nice 30mm ring (I have the StrikeFire red dot on my AK), in low or high mount. Solid construction, with six Torx head screws that don't strip out as easily as Allen head. $20 each.

Agree the rings provided my Ultradot are a PITA.
I also use the Vortex rings as mentioned above.

I use Burris Xtreme Tactical 30mm Rings. Looks like overkill but I have them on several rifles they are aluminum, very light and NEVER come loose.

I have the same rings holding my scope on my AR rifle. So far so good. You have to be careful with some stuff, but Leapers/UTG does make some pretty good products for a very reasonable price.

I found low ones at http://swfa.com/default.aspx
Their part number 420160 and are the low (1/4") same as the Matchdot II mounts
