Hornady 9MM 147 gr. XTP load
Wondered if anyone with a more recent Hornady manual could tell me if there is any load data for Sport Pistol with the 147XTP bullet? Mine is too old...before SP was available. Alliant has data for Sport Pistol with "147 JHP" but curious re any specific XTP info. Thanks if anyone might know.

Re: Hornady 9MM 147 gr. XTP load
Thanks Dave, I did have that Alliant info. They refer to a JHP and give min. COAL as 1.12" at 3.6...was interested to see if Hornady actually had any data for S.P. as they normally use 1.1" COAL with that bullet, so wondering if their max. charge might be different than the Alliant recipe...with the prominent boat tail, shank length is quite different than some JHP's...

Re: Hornady 9MM 147 gr. XTP load
The primary IMO purpose of specified COALs is to indicate chamber volume. Same powder charge with different chamber volume will result in more or less pressure. If you have one of the reference JHPs where they are specifying COAL, a little measurement and math on the projectile height can get you to desired COAL for the new bullet, from a chamber volume perspective. And hopefully it's one that functions in your gun and shoots strait, too.

I looked in my 10th edition. There is no listing for Sport Pistol and this bullet.

Re: Hornady 9MM 147 gr. XTP load
Thanks alot Wobbley! Think current edition is 11, so yours is likely only a year or two back and S.P. has been around since late `17...there are other more popular powders for that bullet, so not surprised it isn`t covered but would have been interested to see their data. Have loaded umpteen coated round nose 147`s and have had excellent results with it so going to give it a try using the Alliant data... Thanks a bunch for taking the time to look and posting. Jerry

Hornady has no Sport Pistol load data for the 147 XTP in 9mm in their 11th Edition either.

Ok, thanks for checking...those two editions would likely be the only two prospects...appreciate it

Re: Hornady 9MM 147 gr. XTP load
Tough to load 147's, fast powders can make high pressures and soft loads are not enough to print at 50 yards.
Before I gave up on 147's , though I never tried HAP, or HPX I had the best luck with CFE Pistol, but is was not soft. I think I was using 4.2gn but check the load data first on the proper charge. `

FYI LoadData.com does not have any load data on 147 grain projectiles (any type) and Alliant Sport Pistol either. They do have loads for 147gr and various other powders, but suitability for Bullseye is unknown

Soft loads with the 147 XTP can do well at 50 yards, but it depends on the barrel twist rate.
