.38 HBWC Bullets
Running out of my stash of Star .38 148gr HBWC bullets and looking for a replacement any suggestions are appreciated.
I use them in my Larry Luttenegger custom 1911.

I'm nearing the end of my Star 148's as well. I've got a case of Magnus/Zero swaged 148's ready go but haven't loaded any yet but they look nice. There's honestly not a ton of options, don't think they even make the Remington 148's any more.

Zero, hornady, or speer have performed well for me in my limited use.

Texas Shooters Supply has Remington HBWC's but they are quite proud of them. $30 per 100.

Sounds like some price gouging since you can buy Zero from Rose for $10 a hundred when you break down the per 1000 price.messenger wrote:Texas Shooters Supply has Remington HBWC's but they are quite proud of them. $30 per 100.

Re: .38 HBWC Bullets
The old Rems with the graphite / japan wax lube usually ran .360 & had a very robust skirt . The last case I got ran .358 , had the Johnson Floodwax lube & skirts were thinner . The Zeros run .357 , have a grease based lube & are soft enough they shoot well from my Colt OMM with .359 throats . I'm getting ready to test the Brazos Hi-Tec coated BNWC @ 8 cents each . Might have to push 'em a little faster , but if they group...........

Zero and Precision Delta have always had a good following from PPC shooters. Remington gets raves from bullseye shooters, but have always been scarce.

I have some Brazos BNWC too. I first have to see if I need to turn them base first for the 52 or not, and find if they’ll shoot.boatbum101 wrote:The old Rems with the graphite / japan wax lube usually ran .360 & had a very robust skirt . Something feels wrong about using cast 148gr wadcutter. Anyone getting good results with cast?

Zane, when you get the right diameter they will shoot well. I had a friend that was casting them for me and I was happy with the groupings. HBWC just much easier to get to shoot well though.

Re: .38 HBWC Bullets
had 2 model 52s and both shot good with bullx wadds. now defunk if you can find them they are good, also zero heads used for many years in ppc. seemed to shoot good in colt natl match, for the few times i shot iy.(now with a new home LOL! of course PPC was with revolver only at the time.
Re: .38 HBWC Bullets
I’ve had good results with Precision Delta and Zero HBWC’s when I was Shooting PPC matches. I have some Dardas and other cast BNWC’s to try out. I really do miss Star bullets and their reloaded wadcutters. Loading wadcutters was a chore using a Rockchucker.

Re: .38 HBWC Bullets
Has anyone done any accuracy testing with the bear creak vs. Zero 148 wadcutter? A fellow BE shooter gave me about 40 to try. I plan to when I switch my press to small primers again, but that may be a while. I do like the look of them. They are coated with a clear slippery coating.Thin Man wrote:I like the Bear Creek HBWC.

Re: .38 HBWC Bullets
I looked at the Bear Creek online and they look good in the picture with thick skirts so they look like the Speer hbwc and I know the Speers will shoot good.
I also noticed they make a HBSWC 185gr. .45 bullet. They look like a 200gr H&G 68 but with a hollow base.
Has anyone tried these?

I tried those in my model 52-2. They where not as accurate as the zero's.jcullen47 wrote:Shooting some Berry's 148gr. plated HBWC in 625-8 shoot accurate and clean

Re: .38 HBWC Bullets
I had some Berrys in remanufactured ammo. They had more than their share of 8s in them.
