What kind of dovetail does BUL Armory 1911 Trophy 5" .45 ACP pistol use?
Hi!
I'd like to replace the rear sight of my pistol (BUL Armory 1911 Trophy 5" in .45 ACP) with an adapter plate to install a Trijicon RMR.
Issue: I do not know the type of dovetail that BUL Armory uses for this specific gun model.
I know there are several types of dovetails (Novak, LPA, Bomar, etc.) but I can't find anything that matches what I'm measuring on my gun.
What I measured:
-Width: .330in (green on the pic)
-Depth: .100in (red AND blue on the pic: 0.8455-0.7455)
-Angle: 65° (calculated with trigonometry: ATAN((0.8455-0.7455)/(0.3855-0.3405))=65°).
-Part in front of the dovetail: 0.310in (in yellow on the pic)
Do you have any idea of what type of dovetail this is?
Thanks!

That’s Bomar pattern.

Pardon my ignorance, Jon, I always thought Bomar is 60 degrees, at least it's what the drawings on Kensight website specify, .359x60 deg.
I think .330 x 65deg is what Colt uses.
I think .330 x 65deg is what Colt uses.

It doesn't seem to be Bomar, none of the dimensions I could find on the Internet for Bomar sights match what I have (depth/angle/width). Do you have a reference for the Bomar dimensions?Jon Eulette wrote:That’s Bomar pattern.

Indeed! I found this webpage (link: mountsplus.com/kensight-1911-a1-govt-mil-spec-white-dot-fixed-rear-sight.html) which states the following: "Made with a MIL-SPEC dovetail, this fixed white dot rear is made to fit the 1911-A1. Whether it be a Springfield, Colt, Rock Island, etc., if it has the .330" wide x .100" tall x 65° cut, this sight will fit.". And then in the specs they write: "Dovetail Dimensions: .330" wide x .100" tall x 65° - MADE TO FIT THE REAR MIL-SPEC SIGHT CUT".javaduke wrote:Pardon my ignorance, Jon, I always thought Bomar is 60 degrees, at least it's what the drawings on Kensight website specify, .359x60 deg.

This matches exactly what I have on my gun. But... what's the name of this fingerprint/dovetail? When looking for "mil-spec 1911 rmr mount" on Google I don't get any results... it looks like it's not the correct name. Do you think it may be the "GI" fingerprint? This webpage from EGWGuns (link: egwguns.com/trijicon-rmr-sro-holosun-407c-507c-mount-for-gi-1911) lists the 1911 A1 for this mount, but the issue is that my gun does not have a lot of space in front of the dovetail (0.310in), while this mount takes a lot of space.

Probably an LPA but call or write to the manufacturer.

Bomar dovetail location that I know for sure.
LPA uses different location.
More than likely your going to have to file/fit the new mount to fit the dovetail. Use appropriate file angle to fit to the slide dovetail.

If that is the same rear sight as the one pictured on BUL Armory’s web page for the 1911 Trophy model, it really, really looks like the same LPA sight that came on the Range Officer.
The elevation screw is centered over the dovetail, meaning it is not tapped into the slide. On common Bomar sights, the elevation screw is to the rear of the dovetail and threads into the slide itself.

Typical LPA cut/dovetail is further to the rear allowing screw to thread into it. LPA makes a Bomar cut sight but has the 60 degree angle.
I would take a protractor and cut a 60 and 65 degree angle on paper and hold it up to your existing dovetail to verify angle. Has worked well for me in the past in a pinch.
Your trig is probably correct, but if your measuring devices were not able to measure the apex of the triangle corner you might have some error. Rods are typically used to measure dovetails....................

Re: What kind of dovetail does BUL Armory 1911 Trophy 5" .45 ACP pistol use?
I found the part number for BUL's rear sight, and it looks like they make them in-house or have LPA make them on an OEM basis. They're in the LPA "style" with an untapped slide (the sight uses setscrews instead of threading into the slide, and the elevation screw is centered in the dovetail).
Here's a European dealer selling the sight, SKU BUL-20701, and showing several views, including a bottom view.
This dealer in New Zealand is selling the sights as a "BUL-LPA" rear sight.
Here's the sight pictured on the BUL Trophy 1911.
Jon, you're correct. It's definitely not the standard LPA dovetail. Comparing it the SARO, the dovetail and elevation screw are closer to the ejection port on the BUL, and the set screws in the SARO are located under the elevator, not on the sides of the sight body.
Still, it doesn't appear to be a standard Bomar setup. EGW's Bomar cut plate might not work without tapping the slide for the Bomar elevation screw.

Re: What kind of dovetail does BUL Armory 1911 Trophy 5" .45 ACP pistol use?
Hi,
This is my first post so I will introduce myself shortly without hijacking this thread. I am an European IPSC shooter, and shoot a Bul SAS 2 STD in 9mm. New on this forum as I was looking for some info on a rear sight for my Bul pistol.
I also found the SKU 20701.
For me I need more as I am looking for a replacement with fibers. I ended up looking at an LPA sight that on the website really looks the same as my iron rear sight. I emailed the manufacturer, but haven't gotten a reply yet.
This is the sight I am looking at. It says Bomar cut, and it has the 2 small screws to fix the sight on the slide.
Any ideas on if this would fit a Bul ?
Cannot post a link yet as I am new, it is the LPA sight with this number : trt54fufo
Thanks

Re: What kind of dovetail does BUL Armory 1911 Trophy 5" .45 ACP pistol use?
Giving this more thought, if I’m understanding correctly it’s like a Bomar cut but the dovetail cut angles are incorrect.
If it were mine, I’d try using oversized Kensight Bomar sight and use the correct safe file to fit it to the slide. File the sight only, not the slide.

Re: What kind of dovetail does BUL Armory 1911 Trophy 5" .45 ACP pistol use?
After asking around, reading around, and searching a lot, I decided to just order the trt54fufo from LPA Sights as I mentioned in my earlier post. It is a rear sight with fiber and a Bomar cut. With some minor adjustments, it fits perfectly in my BUL SAS2 STD. Fitting was done by the gunsmith. 1 hour of work.
So for all BUL owners that look for a rear sight. This comes close to a perfect fit.
Hope this helps other people searching for rear sight replacement for their 1911/2011 BUL
