Would a Springfield GI be a good place to start for a for a distinguished class gun?

Adjustable sights are about $100 and cutting the dovetails and refinishing the slide isn't all that cheap.  It might be easier and cheaper to swap out the hammer and grip safety on a Springfield Range officer.

You could buy a RO, a used GI grip safety for <$10 and a cylinder &slide drop in trigger improvement kit (with hammer) for little more than $100--then you have a ball legal gun with a trigger job for about the same $ as putting adjustable sights on a GI gun.  Plus you get all of the other plus' that comes with the RO over a GI Springfield.

I agree with Rob. The GI would take a lot of work to be ready.

To answer the question, yes it would be an excellent place to start for a CMP legal ball gun.  It will have to have much more done to it than a new RO, but in my opinion you'll have a much better gun at the end of the journey.

I would find a smith for what ever gun bought and have one built. My experience w/ the smiths are they tell you to buy the cheaper gun as it has to be tightened anyway.
