1911 .45 magazine
Is there a preferred magazine maker for semi-wadcutter .45 ammo?
Been studying magazines and there is a difference in ball gun mags and SWC magazines. Wondering who makes the SWC variety.

They’re not made specifically for SWC ammunition, but I’ve found the 7-round Mec-Gar magazines to be absolutely reliable with all bullet types.

Not sure on being specifically SWC designed mags but I use the following with my SWC ammo without any issues: Metalforms 7rd with removable baseplates, went through a few that had welded baseplates that didn't stay together hence the recommendation of the removable baseplate versions. CMC Powermag or Railed Power Mags, can change out the spring to a lighter Wolf for better function and easier loading.

Metalform magazines with their round followers work very well for me with any lswc or jswc I shoot.

Several prominent Bullsmiths I know have recommended Metalform round follower. But, I have had the base plate weld fail on one of those - not good in the middle of a RF string!!!!

Use Tripp 7 rd Cobra with excellent results in both HB and WC 1911’s

Me to. Mine haven't been "tuned" accept for the addition of a round follower.

Chip McCormick Shooting Star for me, works great and easier to load because of the tilting follower feature. Some people like Metalform, but my ball gun just doesn't like it, I get too many alibis with it. I could probably troubleshoot it, but since McCormicks work just fine, I retired all my Metalforms. They were given to me for free at Perry, after all
Re: 1911 .45 magazine
I also like Metalform round follower, and I've also have a baseplate fail. The most recent ones I purchased have removable baseplates. Not sure if that's just standard now, or if I paid more for them!

Re: 1911 .45 magazine
I've had good function with SWCs in the Wilson 47D 7rd magazine. But in my RRA hardball gun the slide does not lock back with the two I have (ordered separately). I've come to appreciate this - it's like my Pardini and I get to dry fire after the string. I've talked to others with 47Ds and they say their slides do lock back.

I too use the Wilson 47D, I have 2 magazines that will not reliably active the slide lock. The follower is worn and needs to be replaced. I don't know where to get them. Anyone know where I could buy some?

Almost anything works in my Colt GC with KKM barrel. Including flat dimpled follower Colt original. Same for SARO with Kart barrel. What does matter is case head to shoulder length. Anything much over 0.920 leads to problems.

i use chip McCormick magazines in 3 different 1911s. they work well, they are almost 25 years old so i don't know how good they are made these days. hopefully they are just as well made as when i purchased them. good luck

Mine haven't locked back since new. But they feed SWCs better than my Chip McCormick custom competitions in my 1911s (RRA & Kimber)brdrgrd wrote:I too use the Wilson 47D, I have 2 magazines that will not reliably active the slide lock. Re: 1911 .45 magazine
I have half a dozen of the Wilson 47's.
One of them wouldn't always drop free, so I emailed them and they said send it back and we'll send you a new one.
Been using them since I bought the gun in '94.

New I buy Mec Gar , mostly I just use any 7 round mag, and replace it with a Mec Gar Follower with the round contour shape.
Typically I cut one coil off , If I am reloading with w321 or BE I have to clean them once in a while WST or vv310 then clean them once a year.

I've had great results with the Metalform rounded follower Mags, using numerous bullet profiles. They also held up really well through hard use and abuse in USPSA competition.
I have several Wilson's which work really well too.
