Camming on the plunger is not that great an idea. The plunger needs to be pushed straight and can break off at the barrel stud. Then takedown gets a lot more interesting. Ask me how I know.

In my experience, all the plunger needs is a light tap with a small plastic faced hammer to “pop” it loose as they tighten with shooting. They don’t need much.

That's what I've always done. A very light tap is all that is required to break the taper loose. Then you can push the button in easily with your thumb with your fore finger through the trigger guard. I use a 2 1/2 ounce jewelers mallet, and use the nylon face:

If you are at the range and don't have a mallet handy, and quick tap on the edge of a bench will do it.

Great idea for the High Standard button .
What did the High Standard factory manual recommend doing way back in June of 1974?
Refer to Page 4 which can be found here: https://histandard.info/Jim_Barta/hsinstr.pdf.
There is an elongated slot in Barrel Takedown Plunger. It allows the Barrel Stud to pass
through it in order to achieve solid barrel-to-frame lockup. The machining process used
to make the slot causes the walls in the Plunger to be rather thin. After it's carburized,
the Plunger does get harder and can also get a little brittle. Subjecting that part to any
type of sudden pounding can result in breakage, regardless of what type of implement is
being used. I personally saw this very thing happen to a fellow club member. After that,
I immediately became a former "Plunger Tapper".

I just had one break on a Houston Citation. I never heard of one of these breaking but I can now see how thin the metal is so I'm not surprised. I have always pushed mine in using the edge of a bench block which doesn't seem too stressful but maybe it is. I replaced it easy enough and it's no worse for wear. Maybe that little tool is a good idea. Where can you get one of those?
