Colt 1911 Series 80
What do you guys think about the series 80? Does the extra parts affect the trigger pull? Are they commonly used for BE guns?
Thanks

Series 80 pistols aren't good pistols from gunsmithing perspective. Colt ' s tolerances and machining were very poor. Typical frame to slide fit was very loose and barrel lugs in slide are offset. I've never liked working on them and that's having nothing to do with firing pin block. Just my 2 pennies.

the gun has already been worked over by a good smith. What are the differences between a 70 & 80? Finnish? Firing pin block....?

The firing pin block made for a poor trigger pull. The barrel on mine had more than maximum headspace cut into the chamber. When it was returned from Colt it still was not as accurate as the 70N series. Sold it.

For the 1st three years after switching to series 80 in the Gold Cup the only change was the safety block. It wasn't until 86 that they did their belly flop. So basically there were 3 years that they were still worth buying. They changed the barrel, bushing and quality control. You can deal with the safety if series 80 was pre 1986.

For what its worth, Ive handled several 80's that had great triggers and the best roll trigger I ever felt was on a series 80 colt with all safety parts in tact, its all in who does the trigger job

I have a 1983 Colt gold cup national match series 80. Granted I reworked the trigger, but it's as crisp as any series 70 I've shot and it has all safety parts intact.
