OK, here goes:

If I didn't include your favorite powder, DON'T vote on one of the options on the list.  Post the name of your powder below and I will add the option onto the "ballot".

If my setup worked, you can vote for multiple powders AND retract a vote.

Pistol Powder List? Empty Re: Pistol Powder List?

Post by Fire Escape Mon Oct 06, 2014 6:34 am

While I cast my vote for 700X, it is not my absolute 'favorite', it is what we have been able to get here in Northern New England this summer. I was down to a few onces of several powders and out of the rest when a friend called to say that he was standing in front of a case of 700X at a LGS. I knew only that it was reported to be fairly versatile and said to get some. Shortly thereafter 6 containers (they are no longer a full pound like much of retailing - they shrunk) showed up and I am working on loads for all our pistol needs at theis time. I have to say that it does not meter all that smoothly through my 10 X measure, frequently a 'flake' will slide between the housing and drum and tend to bind things up. My load development is still in the early stages consisting of 'will it function and drop a falling plate'. I have noticed that I have moved well past the start loads without getting 100% lockback on my Sig 227 while everything tried has functioned with the 1911s.
Of topic for a Bullseye discusion but learning to stand and walk on my new knee has slowed my progress in that field this summer .... but next year!

W231 is a old bullseye shooters load, you don't see many new shooters try it. I cant say why it was once favored by many, not any dirtier than bullseye, about the same cost too. I have 12 lbs as back up powder for my retirement years myself.

In the late 80's Bullseye and 231 were typical powders being used by most BE shooters I knew in San Diego area. So I'm surprised it's that low.

Looks like WST is still a well kept secret. I changed to WST when Winchester stopped making 452AA and have yet to find anything better. If I do much more testing of powders in the 45 I will have to buy a new set of 1911 inserts for my Ransom Rest.
