Differences in vibratory case cleaner performance?
I recently purchased another vibratory case cleaner because it was a deal I couldn't pass up and it was a little larger than my original Lyman. What a difference in the new one, an industrial version of Thumler's Tumbler UV-18. Cases came out cleaner and shinier after just 30 minutes compared to what the Lyman was able to do in over 2 hours. The Thumler's has a different shaped bowl than the Lyman. Could that be the reason for the difference in performance? The whole thing screams heavy duty compared to the Lyman. I also like the fact that it's made in the USA.

My lyman works fine. I use cobb media and a little liquid car wax....run for 1/2 hr...done. I used the same bowl for a year. The cases are clean enough for me.

The small Lyman that I have works fine too. I was just wondering why the Thumler's was able to perform the same results in 1/4 the time. Getting that deep, new looking brass shine consistently is still somewhat elusive. Sometimes I get it, most times not.

Re: Differences in vibratory case cleaner performance?
I bought a Lyman 'Auto Flo' conversion for my Midway cleaner last year and was very impressed with how the media flowed while cleaning faster run times to clean the brass. The 'Auto Flo' part of the equation didn't work well for me as I could not get a large enough 'catch container' under the spout to keep from over flowing. All said, I was impressed enough to buy an entire Lyman 2500 cleaner this year figuring that I would gain the ability to use the 'Auto Flo' while getting the better/faster cleaning of the improved bowl shape. That seems not to be, still can't fit a container under the spout that will collect all the media and with the 'Auto Flo' bowl in place the main threaded rod is not long enough to attach the lid so dust went everywhere until I changed back to the 'standard' bowl.
I believe that bowl shape can have a big impact on how well the cleaner circulates (therefore how well it cleans). It may not be rocket science but then again......
Having been at this for 40 years I am about to order some parts, resurrect my Thumbler and try the stainless pins to see if I can get consistent results. Clean enough to shoot is easy, pretty (and I know that doesn't matter to many) has remained nebulous.

its a harder shake and good media that gets cases clean. The best cheap tumbler I found that really does a good job is the Frankford arsenal one

Re: Differences in vibratory case cleaner performance?
I have been using an old Tombstone vibratory case cleaner forever and a day.
I use corncob media purchased at the local pet store and add some liquid car polish.
Dump in my brass that I am going to load that afternoon or the next day.
I am not one to be in a hurry.
I leave it in for 4 hours cause I have better things to do.
Come back, shut it off, separate the media and the cases are brand new looking.
They all work on the same principle just leave it and forget it and come back to sparkly clean cases
