Rings for mounting red dot on 1911 slide
I want to use one of my Wilson Combat CQBs for Bullseye. I've had a Ckark rib mounted on it and have a Matchdot 2 for a sight. I want to be able to remove the sight when I clean the gun and understand that the standard Ultradot rings won't return to zero when removed and re installed. What is the best ring option for this purpose?
Here's a picture of the gun along with my Hammerli.

the Ultra Dot rings will go back reasonably well if yu glue one side to the sight

I use Leupold Rifleman rings. They are light and strong. Redfield work nice also.

I don't remove the scope on my bullseye pistols with slide mounted scopes when I clean them. That being said, I use the cradle type scope rings rather than the UltraDot style split rings. I've had good luck with Weaver and Burris Zee scope rings. I do use blue Loctite on the screws. You should use the lowest rings available. There are better rings out there, but more expensive, and I never saw any need to switch.

I had a set of Burris XTR 30-mm low (1/4" high) rings laying around from a rifle take off and used them for my wad gun. Overkill but now I have them on everything.

Tom,
I've used low Weavers on all my UD's because I like to do a complete tear down semi annually. My tear down consists of every part being removed and put in a solvent bath, then scrubbed and blown dry before lubing & reassembly. If the rings have been properly lapped in and tightened to the same torque I normally do not have to rezero the sight after reassembling.

+2 on weavers, but no mount will go back exactly to its former zero, but with these it will be close.

Re: Rings for mounting red dot on 1911 slide
There are many shooters who think I am crazy on this. I use Al Marvel's rib with only 3 screws, a 1" Ultradot, and the factory Ultradot rings. I don't use any loc-tite for ANY of it. I take everything off and on frequently and I'm never more than a click or 2 off after putting it back on. I never lapped the rings, or use adhesive.
I use the same sequence to put everything back on every time. I think that contributes to the consistency in the installation.

Well, maybe a little crazy Rob. I have a little pile of junk I haven't got around to throwing away yet. Or, it is possible I also fit that category.

stock rings work and are ok on 22s but your pressing your luck with a 45 they will fail at some point, the weavers wont

David R,
I've been running those aluminum UD rings on a .45 for so long, I just don't believe they are failure prone. The only aluminum UD rings that I saw that failed had loc-tite used on them. The loc-tite is a stronger bond than the aluminum threads and the bolts just pull the threads right out of the aluminum. If you go with a clean mount and clean hardware, you are good to go.

Hi Rob,
I will bet you a nickel ( my max bet) that I can get the aluminum rings provided by UD to fail in 10 shots. I should warn you though that I cheat.
Len
It is a 45 sorta/kinda

Rob & Oldmaster,
You both mention crazy in conjunction with "may" & "little". I have been at this game for some time and it's my belief that the typical Bullseye Shooter is crazy.

Ron,
I have been wracking my mind trying to format an argument to disagree with you. I can't come up with a good counter. So it is possible you may be a little correct.

And they will be fine till the day they aren't... hopefully its not during a match where your score counts. Now this is on a slide mount gun, if you have a frame mount they will probably be fine

Re: Rings for mounting red dot on 1911 slide
I mount them on a slide mount. Remember, I have my irons under the rail so if I have a problem, I have my irons just waiting for me!
Always have a backup plan--but I figure I won't need it. All of my red dots are 1" Ultradots, and I have all of them mounted with matching rings and 2 rings on each gun. I have never had a lick of trouble with those rings.
