I usually use CCI SV for my rimfire needs. It does me well. Is there any advantage to the green tag or precision stuff? It looks as though the specs are very close. Is it worth the big jump in price? Your thoughts please! And thanks!

Wait until you're expert level to start worrying about the precision of the varying grades of ammunition.
CCI Standard Velocity Paper boxes (targetsportsusa.com by the case) is your best bet for CCI ammunition at this point. I use it for practice ammo.

I'm sure others on here will soon chime in with their recommended cheap rounds.

CCI standard velocity plastic box, green tag and pistol match are all the exact same, the only difference is they sort them by doing lot accuracy tests. CCI standard paper box is the same case and bullet components but loaded with a cheaper bulk powder, the lower price difference is made by using the cheaper powder and the cheaper paper box. This is the story straight from the cci technical department.

I myself like eley sport in the purple /yellow box, it costs the same as paper box cci most places, it comes from the aguila factory in mexico but it is eley primed and shoots really well in my marvel and trailside but so does the cci.

CCI ammo question...poll Empty CCI

If I could afford to shoot the good stuff all the time I would.

For several years I had been using Eley SPort for practice and Wolf Match for matches; this worked well. But last year I got a lot of Eley Sport that didn't cycle the gun reliably and I got a lot of Wolf that did not shoot to the same point of impact as the Eley....first time that happened. It was a real pain.

I switched to CCI paper box for both practice and matches but, I think it cost me points.

Just got a case of CCI plastic box and I can tell you it definitely groups tighter than two separate lots of CCI paper...from support at 50 ft indoors. Point of impact is the same.

My suggestion is to:

1. take your particular gun and box of everything you ...can afford/are willing to pay for... and test it back to back from the bench using a rest. Then you can choose a compromise between price and accuracy.

2, If money matters...shoot the cheap stuff for practice..and practice a lot. Burn something better in matches.

I shot cheap ammo until my target groups began to approach the size of the groups I shot from the bench with support then as I progressed I began to trade upwards on the price/quality scale. If your shots are spread out over 3 inches on the target then it would seem that paying extra for ammo that will group 1/2 inch doesn't seem cost effective. If on the other hand you can hold the 9 ring then using good ammo will probably help your score.

Just re read your question,

I tried CCI green tag back to back with plastic box a couple of times...at least for me I never found a significant improvement Green VS plastic blue. For me they shot almost the same and the price jump was significant.

The best thing I could find for my particular gun that I could afford was Wolf Match. Mid level expensive grades of Eley (not the Sport) was better, and probably *really* expensive ammo is even better still but I couldn't justify the expense in my mind.

Good info! Thanks guys....I think I'll just stick with my SV CCI's (plastic box). For the time being I am able to just get into the 90s on slow fire, and am finally starting to get 90's in the timed /rapid. This year my goal is to average 260. Last year was 252. Almost fell over the other day when I shot a 97 timed......all but 1 were in the 10..dropped one in the 7! Thanks again for great insight guys!
