Clean from chamber end....ALWAYS! I've been using rods since Christ was a corporal with no negative results. Never use SS bristles and you should be fine.

Instead of a rod, I use a piece of heavy duty weed wacker string to push patches thru

Re: LSP Barrel cleaning recommendations
from my rifle days... a coated steel or brass rod...Graphite can be abrasive.
just push only from the chamber end as Jon said and DON'T pull it back through from the muzzle

PatchWorm is wonderful. I have one for pistols and one for rifles.

Re: LSP Barrel cleaning recommendations
Weed wacker line or a patch worm. But the important thing to keeping my 22's with tight chambers running is brushing the chamber with a .243 or .25 bronze brush bent to the ~size of a 22 casing. I brush the chamber, pull through a dry patch and then try the drop test (barrel held muzzle down and if the round will not drop in and out I brush the chamber again and then use a patch with some kroil (which does wonders on both fouling and wax buildup), followed by 2 dry patches. If the opportunity is there I then fire several rounds to refoul the barrel or at least restart the fouling process. I brush the chamber before every match and pull through a dry patch. I only use kroll or other solvent when I need it.
Finally I make sure that the mechanism is oiled with a light oil, Hoppes #9 oil, Marvel Machine Gun oil, etc.
