Help me decide on an optic please
I've begun my precision pistol quest by purchasing a Model 41. For now, I will just be practicing at my local range. I may decide to compete down the road though. I now would like to buy an optic for it but I need some opinions from folks that have been there and done that. From reading through lots of posts about optics, the Ultradot Matchdot line of optics seem to be a good choice. I have considered a handgun scope to help my 52 year old eyes with magnification, but I haven't seen anyone mention scopes so I'm guessing that, in general, scopes are not a normal choice. So, I see that there's a 25, 30, Matchdot and Matchdot ll. My questions are, is the Matchdot the best all around optic and if so, which model would be the best choice for my old eyes? I do apologize in advance if this question has been asked before.

Best is often defined by budget. The best is Aimpoint coming in 4-600.00. Best for the buck is Ultradot in my opinion. For a little less money you can look at a Sightron S-30. Some swear by the Sightron because there is no target reduction looking thru the lens. And the bottom end of what I would put on a decent pistol is the ADCO. I have all the scopes I just listed. I have more Ultradot then all the others combined. The 30mm tube would work great on that 41.

Unless you have a rock solid hold with very little wobbly you don't want a pistol scope. I have 3 of them 2 fixed and one variable but only use them when shooting benchrest pistol. They are great for shooting those tight groups off a rest but at least for me trying to hold them steady one handed is very discouraging. I guess if you learn to accept your wobble and not snatch the trigger they would work. That said I have 3 Matchdot IIs and really like them they would be my pick as I can't afford 3 Aimpoint 9000. I also have a Ultradot on my GP100 but have not used it much. Don

It's pretty hard to beat the Ultradot for the money. I have yet to experience one to go bad although I have read about it on here. Personally I prefer the 1" over the 30mm. I have lots of different dots but my match guns wear the Ultradot. The sightron seems a optically very nice scope but I prefer the dot size in the Ultradot. I tried the multiple dot scopes too but found no advantage for me and it's a heavier scope. KISS (keep it simple...) I have several slide mounted and lots of rounds on each, they just keep working.

I've got 'em all. Aimpoint is the best. They are on my best pistols. Ultradot 25mm for starting out/secondary.
MD and MD II are big and have many dot sizes, but after a while many folks just seem to end up using the MDs at 4 MOA dot and then switch to UD 25mm because it is already 4MOA and small.
That is my feeling as well, just get a UD 25mm. 30mm dot shows too much.
Having looked at 2MOA and 4MOA Aimpoints, they are both tiny! There is barely a difference, but they are half the size of the UD 4MOA dot.

Best bang for buck is the Ultradot either a 25mm or 30mm. Shop around for prices. I prefer the 30mm personally. Really though you should build a good understanding and ability to shoot irons first.

Re: Help me decide on an optic please
Personally, I like older Tasco ProPoints. I've also got an Aimpoint 5000, 1" Ultradot, a Matchdot 1 and Matchdot 2. Of all of them, my Tasco has the crispest dot; all the others tend to look more like starbursts. That said, I've heard the Ultradots and Matchdots have the least amount of parallax...but then again, if you're shooting with the dot in the middle of the scope, parallax shouldn't be a problem.

I am fairly new to bullseye, and I bought Ultradot Matchdots for both my .22 and my .45.
The majority of shooters in my club use them, now I can see why, it is a very good red dot for the money.
