loading 38 hbwc's on a Hornady LNL
when loading these hbwc's I have to align each one so it will go in the seating die. I think it is the shell holder spring pushing the case off center on the last station which is my seating station.
Does anyone have a fix for this or does any company make a seating die that tapered so there is a little more room for the hbwc to slide in it ?

Many make a custom expander that let's the bullet seat 3/4 and then the seating die pushes it the last 1/4. The crimp die finishes the job

Are you sure your pawls are adjusted right. I am using Hornady dies with the flat seating stem. No problems.

I believe the pawls are right since everything elase lines up. It looks lie the shell holder spring is starting to drop down in that position and allowing the case to tilt inward. I hve to tilt the case outward with my finger to get it to go into the die.messenger wrote:Are you sure your pawls are adjusted right. I am using Hornady dies with the flat seating stem. No problems.

I think the problem is the spring. I am using RCBS dies and there is no bevel on the bottom of the die to guide the case in, the case has to be exact or it hits the bottom of the die edge and won't go in. Is there a die made with a bevel or how would I put a becel in the bottom of the die ?

I have tried a lot of different manufacturer's dies and I keep coming back to Hornady. RCBS are my least favorite for pistol. Hornady has a drop down sleeve that helps straighten a projectile that wasn't set perfectly on the brass. It guides everything straight up into the die. It also comes with two stems. One for round nose and one for flat.

I have read this problem many times and even asked Hornady. Hornady's exact words were that the press was not designed to seat on station 5. I never found a fix for the station 5 tilt. It was one of the reasons I finally got rid of the lnl. Had it for 20 years.

Not having one, are you crimping separately

No I am not crimping separately. Station 1 is decapping and sizing, 2 is belling 3 is adding powder 4 is powder check die and 5 is seating and crimping very little or removing the bell.

Buy a PTX expander setup, seat on station 4 and crimp on station 5. I've got 2 LNL AP's and never had issues seating but never used HBWC though.

My problem is only with hbwc's because they are flat and have to go right in the seating die. with rn or jacketed I have no problem because the point guides the bullet in the die. I will give the PTX a try and seat on station 4

FYI the dillon 38 special dies have 2 different interchangeable internals, one is meant for HBWC.

The internals are not the problem, its the bottom of the die being so squared off it doesn't guide the bullet in the hole in the bottom of the RCBS die. If the bottom of the die had a slight bevel it would work great

The dillon dies have a good flare at the bottom. Perhaps you need to buy a new seating die.

I thought Dillon dies are proprietary for dillon machines

Nope that's all I use for pistols on my LNL presses. The only Dillon dies that are proprietary are the Square Deal dies, they can't even be used on other Dillon presses.
