What kind of shoes?
Wondering what kind of shoes (footwear) do you wear when you shoot pistol and why? I know it’s really individual but I would like to get some ideas.
I am a newbie to the bullseye pistol shooting that started this summer. I tried a few different shoes, hiking shoes, military boots, etc. So far none of them are perfect fit for me. Funny but my most favorite shooting footwear so far is a pair of flat-sole sandals. Not 100% sure if they are NRA and CMP legal though.

Good Afternoon Bushi!
They actually make specific pistol shooting shoes that you can purchase if you want to. Usually they are visually striking and are not comfortable to walk in.
Frankly, when someone wears a set at one of our local matches, they are referenced as the guy wearing the "Clown Shoes".
I prefer a pair of sneakers, whatever I have on my feet at the time. If it is wintertime, you will see me on the line with swampers, muc-lucks, hiking boots, whatever I was wearing for the weather outside. Usually I remove the snowshoes prior to shooting. Hip boots would not be out of line when the storms roll in at camp perry.
I would not recommend sandals or other open toed shoes, they are magnets for hot brass!
Our good friend TonyH has a sweet pair of zebra skinned acrylic healed brogues with snake eye dice in the heals for when he is really styling!
In all seriousness, a good pair of skateboard style sneakers will do you well. They have good lateral support and are not too squishy in the soles. Get the right size and they are comfortable. Dont put too much thought into your shoes, concentrate on the basic fundamentals.
Regards,
Cranky

Usually Keen Newports. It's what I wear for most of the summer. Plus, after it rains, some of the ranges I shoot at have huge puddles. Wearing Keens lets the water just run out, rather than dealing with wet socks and swimming pools in my shoes. (I prefer not wearing boots).

Re: What kind of shoes?
I have a pair of shooting shoes that I actually like alot; however, they are not really made for walking. Because of that I rarely wear them for bullseye. It's a literal pain to walk back and forth for scoring. I find that a nice flat pair of sneakers works best for me. Oddly enough, the less "support" they have, the more stable I feel. I do feel that footwear can be very specific to the individual though. Goto the shoe store and try them on. Assume the stance and test how well balanced you feel. I wear boots 90% of my life, but I just can't shoot in them. I feel so off balance in them.

Flat, flat, flat. Don’t want to rock onto the balls of your feet.

I think any shoes that give you a comfortable, stable and repeatable stance will do the trick.

I've always worn Converse All Stars and I notice that Keith Sanderson usually wears them too so I can't be too far off….

You could also try power lifting shoes which are flat bottomed. They look a bit dorky but who cares.

Sketcher SN 60101 leather low quarters. Flat but have traction and lace up for firm support.

Cranky,
I haven’t heard “swampers” mentioned since my dad died. He was a logger and his normal winter dress was Chippewa woolen shirt and trousers and swampers which to us meant rubber bottom boots.
While shooting I usually wear 6” leather work boot with flat soles.

Overall, shoes are like pet loads, everyone has their favorites. And yet most of them will work just fine.

High top and flat sole for stability. Checkered bright color to distract the competition.

Re: What kind of shoes?
We all agree that the flat sole is more important than anything else. I also thought that covering your ankles is nearly essential to make your feet even more stable, but my assumption did not find it right so far. I personally shoot better with a pair of slide sandals like the one below photo than flat sole shoes/boots. I don't know why... I guess I will have to to find weather proofed sandals for the winter time shootingjames r chapman wrote:Flat, flat, flat. Don’t want to rock onto the balls of your feet.

I have a pair of Merril shoes, kind of like a heavy duty tennis shoe. Very comfortable.

I'm all for the pragmatic, but imagine showing up and kicking everyone 's butt in a pair of these:

Re: What kind of shoes?
Boots above the ankle are not allowed in International Pistol competition so they make those special clown shoes for the Olympics level shooters. It's not worth it in my opinion unless you're goal is the National Team and Olympics.
NRA and CMP allow good lace up boots. Use them. Army boots, hiking boots, whatever you have or prefer.
