45 ACP 230 grain RN cast bullets
I’ve found my old stash of about 4000 230RN cast lubed bullets. These were cast by myself and a friend almost 25 years ago for the purpose of practicing for EIC matches. The problem now is that I really have no use for them in bullseye. The game only requires jacketed safe ammo which means a 185 JHP will do.
So what should I do with them? I can think of a few options:
1.) Shoot them, God hates a coward!
2.) Use them as trading stock. For that I have to find an action shooter that isn’t shooting a 9mm.
3.) Melt them and cast them as 200 SWC or 185 BNWC
4.) wait for the CMP to re-instate the 1911 230 “Hardball” rules as Saint John Moses Browning intended.
Let’s have some fun and make it a bit of a poll! So what should I do with these old bullets? Pick an answer and stat why it’s your choice!

200g SWC is the standard around here, so that's what I'd do.
Seems like a lot of work, though.

I used 230 jrn with 3.8 BE for my EIC and 900 service pistol match loads. Shot great. The lead rn should be even nicer.

I vote #1. shoot them till the cows come home. Any other option seems costly or a pain in the rear.
But you know I’m a beginner so i don’t know what I don’t know.

I would go with #1 or #2.
Melting them down to cast will be messy with the lube that is on them.
If you cannot find someone in the Action Shooting crowd, put them out as table prizes?
I believe the new CMP rules allow for any projectile, so they would be allowed in competition.

List them on GunBroker at a starting price somewhat below current market level, ship in "doubled" USPS Flat rate boxes.

Honestly, why not just down load them pretty heavy, and use them for practice on the short line? Don't really need to be super accurate. I bet you could run a pretty darn soft, slow load.

It’s a sin to waste finished products….
Use them and or share. A new acquaintance from castboolits sold me a bunch of finished but unlubed “boolets” he no longer needed at a buck a pound

Re: 45 ACP 230 grain RN cast bullets
The rules state any jacketed ammunition. It no longer requires 230 FMJ Ball. Thus most shooters use a 185JHP at 775 fps or so.

From the 2023 pistol rules v4
4.4 Ammunition
Competitors in any CMP sponsored, or sanctioned pistol event may use any safe
single-projectile ammunition appropriate for the pistol and cartridge that is being
used.

Actually for 2023 we no longer even need to shoot Jacketed. Any safe ammoWobbley wrote:The rules state any jacketed ammunition. It no longer requires 230 FMJ Ball. Thus most shooters use a 185JHP at 775 fps or so.
