First topic message reminder :
What are your thoughts on the S&W 22A for bullseye shooting? Does this pistol have what it takes for competition?
Thanks

I'm sure there are some very slow .22 shorts that wouldn't be very good, but if you shoot a 40grain .22LR at 900 feet per second out of a high standard, or a 40 grain .22 short at 900 feet per second out of a really old high standard, I don't think it will shoot differently to 50 yards only because it's a .22 short.
Maybe High Standard can help you track down a magazine:

otherwise
www.gunbroker.com
But 22 shorts aren't 40 gr.

Yeah, I placed an order for one and got an email saying they are backordered for 120 days. I'm sure it's not like there is a real demand for the model C mags, so I'm skeptical the order will ever get filled.OldMaster64 wrote:You can get them direct from Triple K for 46.00. SKU2071M.

Good info, thanks. There is nothing aluminum on the model C. It weighs in at 33oz, all steel.Jack H wrote:High Standard Model C is a mostly prewar gun.

Magazines are where you find them. Like here once
http://www.gunauction.com/buy/7239975/magazine-clips/hand-guns/high-standard-model-c-22-short-magazine
Oh try here http://www.gunclips.net/hdmihist.html
From my experience with Model 103 and 107 High Standard Olympic short shooters with the aluminum slides are not good bullseye guns.
Heavy use will wear the slide. It's fairly soft aluminum. Accuracy is nowhere near what 50 yd regular 22 will do.
Been to gunclips.net, mag is out of stock. But it is also the Triple K mag.
I'm thinking auctions are the only place to find the mags.. hate auctions, don't really trust the people on the other end.

Re: Bullseye .22 pistol
Yeah, that's what I want to do. I just want a couple more mags for it. The original mag still works with 7 or 8 in it, doesn't feed right with more.Rob Kovach wrote:Longslide,
You say you really like the HiStandard C that you already have. Instead of taking rumors about it's accuracy as fact, shoot it at 50 yards and see how it does. Every gun is a little different. Shoot what you have and have fun. If you learn that you would have more fun shooting something else, THAT's the time to buy something else.

I am upset that triple k didn't have them in stock for you.I went all the way to the point of entering my cc number to see if they were in stock.Kind of a scam if they let you buy it and then say they are out of stock.IMO

Re: Bullseye .22 pistol
To be fair to Triple K, they said they would not bill my credit card until they actually shipped. But then I'm afraid to ask my wife if it showed up on the credit card bill.

Have you tried "Bobs Gun Shop" in Royal AR? They list your magazine and advertise 42,000 mags in stock. They might have one.

Re: Bullseye .22 pistol
Just heard back from Bob's Gun Shop... They are out of these as well.
I did shoot at 50yds yesterday with the HS. Clearly the gun can shoot in the 9 and 10 ring -- me, not so much. I need practice with the gun.
On the plus side, I really like the trigger.

Shoot it for awhile with the magazine you have, keep an eye out for a 2nd magazine on gunbroker and ebay, and have fun....maybe while you are watching gun broker you can find a nice deal on a more modern high standard--they have nice triggers too.
Meanwhile, keep shooting the gun you have, and HAVE FUN!!

bullseye 22 pistol
Well I've put close to 300 rounds through the 22A with good results. I have found that it digests Winchester, Federal and Remington ammo very well. But I have found a significant number of misfires with Remington 22 LR High Velocity. This is just not the 22A but also in my Ruger MK III and Walther .22. The number of misfires is in the range of 20%. Some will fire after the round is reinserted into the gun while some will not fire at all regardless of where the firing pin hits.
Anyone else experiencing this problem?

According to the internets, Remington rimfire is to stay away from. "Thunderduds" they call them. For cheap bulk ammo, Federal is much better. I've also had good luck with Winchester M-22; I fired 200 rounds last night and had zero malfunctions out of my Ruger. CCI is even better in my experience, but more expensive and hard to find.

Everybody has that problem with Reminton Thunderbolts....it's not the gun, it's the ammo. Use it for practice or slow fire. Too unreliable for timed or rapid fire.

Rem is supposed to bring a new rim fire facility on line during 2014. I'm wondering if Vegas has established odds on a ftf problem for ammo produced there?

Thunderbolts feed just fine, they have junk primers and don't go bang....which is an important feature.

Re: Bullseye .22 pistol
Rob I've never fired a T Bolt in my life. Rem SV is an ammo plagued by the same problem. Have seen a comp not clued into the situation who had 4 ftf in an SF string ????
In the 70's a very experienced shooter at our club was advised by Rem that his gun needed checking after he gave them a number of duds. Jim collected every ftf he could find on the line. He got a lot of it, guys saved it for him. Perry rolls around and he takes it to Rem. They "took it to their lab" and several mo's later advised him he had a problem w/ his pistol.
Now how do you judge a co who is willing to do that? Did they not look over FP signature's?
It is a Bleeping shame!!

The Remington .22s that I've tried are SO bad, I wouldn't buy it for $2/box if it was the only thing I could buy. I just don't need that kind of frustration.

Re: Bullseye .22 pistol
Ive shot nearly a brick of the Remington white box that the cmp sold and several boxes of Remington target and all have went bang and is very accurate. Only with the cheap hv stuff did I ever have duds.

I've switched to using Federal and CCI when I can get them. The misfires from the Remington ammo causes my timed and rapid fire strings to go down the tube. I now use the Remington for rifle mostly. Unfortunately I bought 2 500 round bricks of the Remington HV some months ago before I was aware of the problem.
On the bright side I really like my 22A pistol. It's a lot of fun to shoot. I'll keep using it to measure it's reliability. It has many stampings and plastic parts but as I see it that's how a $300 pistol can be profitably produced. I can remember my S&W M41 in 1970 cost $125 new. So at today's labor costs a M41 for $1500 new is still a good deal thanks in great part to the use of CNC machines.

I think I got ripped off.I paid 169.00 for my 41. But, it was two years later.I have been looking at the 22As and think I will get one. They do look like they would be fun to shoot. I have a bunch of Remington golden bullets and they always seem to go bang.

Len, you'll find the 22A comes in several flavors. Mine is the bull barrel model with the soft grips. The soft grips are preferable to me. The do make the 22A in a fluted barrel with wood grips. I might have gotten that one if any had been available.
Regardless of the style it is really accurate. I fired the NM course in practice the other day and shot an 847 out of 900. This was outdoors on the 50 and 25 yd line. I'll keep shooting to outdo that score.
