Substitute for WW 452AA
First topic message reminder :
You old heads that loaded 452AA in your paper punchers in the 80s... You make note of what was the best replacement when it went away? A quick google says WST. I'm planning to try to come as close as I can to KCs old heavy cast bullet 38 Super load.

I use 4.3 452AA @ OAL of 1.200" with the Nosler 185 JHP.It always shot around 2" from my Ransom Rest at 50 yds. I'll have to dig through my files to find my chronograph test. I have tried WST again and have used both 4.5 And 4.7, my best results have been with the 4.5 with the Nosler and the Zero JHP,s. I have not Ransom rested these loads but my scores have remained close to what I been shooting.(which has not been good lately). when I was shooting on a regular basis I used the 452AA, 4.3 at 50 yds and 3.8 at 25 yds with Valiant 200 gr SWC. I'll dig up my targets for both and try to post them later.
Randy
I neglected to report back on this.
4.3gn of 452AA with a 185gn Nosler JHP at 1.200" OAL is a great load.
We had an 1800 plus a leg match in early December. I shot my (old-skool) hardball gun with this load for the CF 900 and the leg match. I had hoped to get out to the range beforehand to test this load out but I did not, so I went in cold - no sighting in, no function testing, nothing.
My 4 slow fires were 96-93-97-97, and I finished with a 293-11x for the leg match.
That dog'll hunt. Thanks for the pointer.

To revive this.. We shot 100 rounds this weekend of 452.
All long line slow fire practice.. averaged 92/94s.. I am rather pleased.. 14 twist barrel, cast lead..A slight tweek, and we'll try another 100 rounds soon..Looks very promising..

The black goo on Star bullets is gasoline soluble. 2 hours in the hot sun and it is completely dissolved. Bullets are dried in the sun .. Tomorrow new lube.. and we'll set them over some 452AA and see how they perform.. This is the last..about 1000.. It is either use them, or donate to the Smithsonian..Kept them around to settle inquires about BN..All Stars I have tested are in the 8 range.. Soft..too soft in my book..

John
I'll set these up for shortline..practice if nothing else.. There aren't enough left to get excited about.. I am very happy with the 200 gr cast Penns at 50 yards with 452AA @ 3.8...Still testing, but the groups have been very good thus far.. Tomorrow we'll shoot some more with a slight tweak to the load...
So, somewhere in the very low 3.s
I need to experiment a little... The gun runs very well with 3.0 bullseye short line and 180 Penns. I believe it'll run at 2.9

Re: Substitute for WW 452AA
Interesting, I actually need to go a little higher charge weight with lighter bullets to get the gun to function. 3.9 with 200gn SWC (when I was reloading for the long line and shooting lead) vs. 4.3 of 452AA with a 160gn SWC. That latter is a sweet-shooting load, and is what I currently shoot (and have been shooting for ~25 years).

Re: Substitute for WW 452AA
Yes, remember, we have frame mounted optics, and a very light slide, heavy fast twist barrels.. so we can go low...and still function well..it throws brass from one to one and half points down the line..slightly to the rear, so it misses the shooter on the right, and falls behind him..That's when she is shooting right hand.. switch hitterjohn bickar wrote:Interesting, I actually need to go a little higher charge weight with lighter bullets to get the gun to function. 3.9 with 200gn SWC (when I was reloading for the long line and shooting lead) vs. 4.3 of 452AA with a 160gn SWC. Well, I was shooting irons at the time, but with a full-length Bo-Mar rib and Kart barrel, so yeah, point taken
