Possible new pistol complex in Ohio
A few comments have been made here and on FB so I am starting a new topic.
There is a large trap shooting complex near Columbus called Cardinal Center. They are currently looking into the construction of a 300 point range along with action pistol ranges. The proposed complex would be large enough to host the National Precision Pistol Championship. They have a large campgrounds on site, a beautiful vendors row, and many other wonderful amenities. It is very accessible and you can actually see their events happening as you drive past on I-71. They are truly professionals at running large scale shooting events.

So are you just spreading rumors, or is there more to learn from this post?

I heard this weeks ago, and it appears to be of substance.. I hope it comes to pass. A computer search of the facility shows the capacity and certainly the ability to conduct the Nationals. It would solve a lot of present issues..

If there is an opportunity there, I'd be for it. If done as well as their trap complex it would be an awesome shooting venue.

Yes the CMP would have been a great place but looks like they didn't want to invest that much In to pistol shooting

Re: Possible new pistol complex in Ohio
Let's see, a government owned military facility that is already used for firearms training or a private facility subject to potential control or closure by municipal, county or state jurisdiction? How many private ranges have been closed in the past versus military / governmental?
Just something to think about in the long term. If we leave Camp Perry, I would not expect the opportunity to ever return if the new site were to close.

Re: Possible new pistol complex in Ohio
I think that military bases can close just as easily as a private range. Most of the ranges that have closed in our area were run by grumpy old members who had no business skills.
One of the ideas in the last year passed around by Ohio shooters was to hold a pistol match at Camp Perry before Nationals as a warm up and fund raiser for ORPA. We quickly found out how difficult it has become to do that. Rifle matches at Perry have become very hard to schedule so an extra pistol match was going to be close to impossible. Cardinal Center would give a lot of guys a chance to shoot a match at the same place Nationals are held.

Six & 10,
The schedule @ perry is tight. Cecil you will recall the yr the champs was an 1800 because we lost the .45 matches due to rainout. Just no more time in the schedule for which ONG is responsible. They have the Nat Champs blocked in for several yrs in advance.
I lived on CI for 39 yrs and every few yrs "Champs to leave Perry" was an issue.
Six you certainly state the several advantages for using a venue such as the Central OH facility. I doubbt that NRA will split Rifle & Pistol unless necessity dictates they do so. Taking Smallbore elsewhere is another story, such a small number of shooters making demands out of all proportion to their number, tying up a range that can be much more utilized by Pistol or High Power.
Just my nickel's worth,
Ron Habegger

Re: Possible new pistol complex in Ohio
I was at Perry in 2013 which was the same year I started shooting bullseye. I thoroughly enjoyed myself but couldn't make it in 2014. I'm attending this year and if it moves I'll be there.
I know of several people that have gone to Perry once and say they will never go back, maybe a new venue will get them to attend? I know for many moving The Nationals will kind of be like when the Grand American moved from Vandalia, Ohio to Sparta, IL. Vandalia had a ton of history too, Annie Oakley shot there and my favorite Roy Rodgers was there too. The difference being the Vandalia OH range was is decent shape and the ATA was forced to move due to an airport expansion.
The worst thing that can happen to our sport is for the Nationals to die a slow death of neglect, that isn't history I want to look back on.

Re: Possible new pistol complex in Ohio
As great as camp perry is and its history, if no one is going to step up and fix the failing mechanics required to have a enjoyable shooting experience the less people it will draw. If they have to move it to continue in a positive direction, then that's on those that would not do what it takes to keep perry alive. As to future closings, One door closes another one opens. Im sure there will always be somewhere the nationals could be located to.
