New SV CCI .22 (35 in Paper Box) Issues
First topic message reminder :
I recently bought some "new" CCI .22. It's the new style box and looks the same as usual. I usually practice FIFO (First In First Out), but I had only bought 4 bricks so though I would just shoot that first. I only shot 100 rounds and of that, 5 from the first box and 3 from the second box fired differently. They poofed, rather than popped, and left a big blue cloud of smoke. I wasn't able to tell if it affected the shot or where it landed on my target.
Has anyone ever experienced this with CCI, or any other .22 cartridge? I'm wondering if it is light strike from my pistol or the ammo. I don't remember this happening with the other CCI, but I could try another pistol. I know this is a small sample, but 8 of 100 is disconcerting.
Any ideas or opinions?
Thanks in advance,
Joel

AP,
What was the turn around time from CCI for the 2 cases from shipment to receipt back to you?

For me, it was over a month. They shot up almost all the ammo I sent them, to try and figure out the problem. I understand and accept why it took so long. After a long wait, I called CCI, and they explained the testing they were doing.

Re: New SV CCI .22 (35 in Paper Box) Issues
Ha, that would surprise me. They paid for all my returned ammo and said that while it was in spec for velocity, it was towards the lower end. If it truly was in spec, I'm not so sure that they would've replaced it so I am suspicious that they would admit to any errors.Gustavo1957 wrote:Has CCI posted a list of problem Case Lot Numbers?

Re: New SV CCI .22 (35 in Paper Box) Issues
A dozen or so years ago to more recent, I bought an occasional brick of CCI SV in paper. All resulting in about 2 cases worth. Three times shooting from this collection of about 10 lot numbers, I have had numerous weak cyclings from my pistols. Most recent lot was 100% weak in different pistols. The first time had near 50% weak cycling in just one box. At that time CCI failed to find a problem and wrote me off.
Some lot numbers. Not all are tried ammo. I hesitate to waste my time even trying. I am not a happy camper.

That must be some old stuff. Current Lot numbers have an additional digit.
D13AA06
D13AA07
Are sitting on my floor both had 100 rounds used for testing all OK. D13AA03 is all gone except about 1 K one soft round noted and another D13 XXXX I did not write down that was error free except one that was a dud.
I have had two or three problem rounds out of 9K. What is an acceptable bad round rate with 22 rimfire these days?

My lot number L20ZA05 would fail at least once per 5 round mag. Acceptable to me is perhaps 1 or 2 per 1000.

Lot NO: H01AA03 has only had 1 FTF in 4 bricks so far. Bought in 9/2019.
I have 2 more unopened cases H01AA02 & A03AA07 I believe should be OK before issued started.
It would be great to get them verified.

I have been watching Target Sports USA CCI SV ammo. And they have been OOS three times since the first of the year and they are getting shipments of maybe 100 cases at a time. When you select a case they display quantity on hand. They turnover their supply very quickly. This morning I ordered a case and 14 were on hand. Now there are 9 cases. Just pointing out that whatever was wrong with a batch last year that batch is not in stock in the large volume sellers.

Where are the lot codes stamped? Only on a full case? On each brick? On each box? I have a new brick but am not seeing any lot coding.

Look inside of the flap on one of the individual boxes.

Also, some boxes have it imprinted on the back. You need to hold it at an angle
to see it.

Here is time frame outline:Plunker wrote:AP,

Contacted CCI - 11/21/19
After some hickups with UPS return labels both boxes were picked up by 12/4/19
I got confirmation of testing being complete on the first 5000 box and issue confirmed on 12/12/19
I got confirmation of 2nd box testing complete and check is being issued on 12/17/19
I received check on 12/22/19
So it took about a month in my case, and I find it quite acceptable accounting for the amount of similar cases Vista Outdoors were processing.
I still have not reordered CCI SV yet, but instead ordered Federal Gold Medal (disappointed as guns are very sensitive to this ammo), and just recently Geco Bolt Rifle Optimized (per tread on the forum, - haven't tried yet)

Re: New SV CCI .22 (35 in Paper Box) Issues
Bought case of CCI SV in April 2019. Put into steel ammo boxes. Finally started to use them - new color boxes of 50 - sort of purple-blue color - red horizontal banner at bottom saying "Target." Garbage. Have been shooting CCI SV (32 in 100 round plastic years ago and now 35 in 50 round paper) for many years. Many cases. Attempted to use the new stuff in three pistols that had been absolutely happy with the dark box CCI SV with continual failure fully to eject. Noticeable that the new rounds are under-powered! Wrote a letter to CCI and will see what happens. Lot number on flap is B15AA01. So what SV works like the old CCI SV?

Re: New SV CCI .22 (35 in Paper Box) Issues
I just finished shooting case no. D13AA03 and UPS delivered this AM a new case from Target Sports USA M10AA04. No issue with the old case. One thing is certain is that if CCI is sequentially numbering these cases of CCI SV, the old inventory, people are complaining about above is surely long gone if you buy from a large distributor.

Re: New SV CCI .22 (35 in Paper Box) Issues
Perhaps. Letting a year or two pass may be the better decision.
However, it looks as if it is probable that two lot numbers are used on/with a case of CCI SV. The case itself has a lot number seen on the case's sticker and then a different lot number is seem on the flap on the 50 round boxes. Mention is also made of a "Container Number." So perhaps the new CCI SV is imported inside of shipping containers?

Re: New SV CCI .22 (35 in Paper Box) Issues
No, the case Lot No. is identical to the lot numbers on the individual 50 round packs in the SV boxes I have. There is also a Container No. which is a three digit number that only appears on the case. If CCI takes advantage of all three digits then they have 999 cases within a Case Lot no. that is a lot of 22's. I have been looking at Target Sports inventory turnover of the SV and they have run out of stock at least 4 times since January 1. Since they shipped M10AA04 to me they ran out again.
I really have no way to tell just how much they are selling, but they do list cases in stock up to 99+. So I am fairly confident that they have sold something greater than 400 cases this year.
I am happy with the CCI SV that I have been shooting. Two range days this week working on 25 yard Rapid fire and shooting 25 targets each day. No issues other than one stovepipe and shooting a Model 41 cases just do not get out sometimes.

Re: New SV CCI .22 (35 in Paper Box) Issues
Conclusion may well be that QC issues have been resolved. Still, absent clear explanations from CCI/Spear, I am inclined to wait for months of reports of no issues with CCI SV.
CCI has agreed to have me ship two cases back to them. Agent with whom I spoke seemed OK. At the end of the day, I may not be out much money, just a considerable effort and inconvenience. So: continue to report good and bad news. . . . . .

As to a clear explanation from CCI/Speer, I would be surprised to see anything from them. Maybe a comment from CS staff but nothing from Corporate is expected by me.
I will provide an update after I use up the next case.

A tour of the factory. From a manufacturing perspective, if they make a slight change in process it can have an unexpected result, good or bad. Without feedback from the user, they can’t know what the results truly are.
And for the record, I don’t think CCI is importing SV ammo.

So is this problem confined to the lots packaged in the new art work with the red banner? My supplier is still selling the "old" artwork lots.

It seems to be although I've found old NOS boxes in the newer brick wraps.Jeff Porter wrote:So is this problem confined to the lots packaged in the new art work with the red banner? My supplier is still selling the "old" artwork lots.

Where are you guys getting this ammo that has an issue? I am buying mine from TS USA and I have just finished off the 2nd case of 035 SV and I have not seen any issue with the new art work boxed ammo.

But CCI is aware of it
